6800GT PCIe or the X850XT?

I have a preorder for the x800xl right now from ATI, but I just called today and they said that the ship date is being pushed out again from this week to the middle of next month. I'm beginning to really hate their customer serice. As an alternative I was thinking about getting the 6800GT PCIe for $420 or for about $50more I can get the x850xt. For the extra money is the x850xt really even worth it? Is the performance worth the extra $50 than the 6800gt? I will be using the card for playing games on 1280x1024 with 4aa/8af.

My rig:
A64 3000
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
1GB Patriot pc3200LLK
Xaser III with Aspire 520w PSU
Lite-On SOHW 832S

I'm not to worried about trying to mod my board into an SLI b/c I don't have the SLI bridge and can't find anywhere to buy it.

More about : 6800gt pcie x850xt

IMHO, the $50 is definately worth the difference between the 6800GT and X850XT.

Having said that, I don't think either card will have a problem in any current game at 1280x1024 with 4aa/8af.

But if if you can afford the $50, go for it.

Either card will do fine for you but if you can spare the cash get the X850XT.

Cleeve, the GF6800GT will struggle in some games at 1280x1024 with 4X/8X. Farcry, and NFSU2, and possibly MOHPA(need to test this) will not be smooth/playable at those settings.

With the GF6800U, NFSU2 was nice and playable at 1280x1024 2X/8X and max details. Actually, max AA&AF was playable, but sat in the 29-33 fps range most of the time. So fraps made me lower AA to get those numbers up a bit. Farcry, I am playing at 1280x1024 highest, with 0X/8X, and it plays well except for an occasional hitch like [H] saw withthe 6800GT they tested. I'll try 4X/8X in farcry for the fun of it tonight. EDIT: 1280x1024 max 4X/8X is very playable, though it does chug in a few places. I found 2X/8X to be better on certain demanding levels.

If the goal is 4X/8X max detail at 1280x1024, he should go with the X850XT. It's definately more powerful than the 6800GT.

I guess I am less skeptical of people than you are. Isn't it easier to just answer his question?

Why can't you find a X850XT pci-e card? Am I missing something? He didn't say AGP did he?

Go to http://www.pricewatch.com</A> and they are all over the place. I'd have 6 sites (5 of which I have placed order from in the past) to choose from, who currently have it for under list price including shipping. Doesn't seem hard to believe he might just be ordering one of those. Where are you from? Are these cards unavailable there?

Here is one for $475 free shipping.

Makes sense that those components were recommended by someone such as yourself. I was tempted to buy that patriot from ZZF myself after hearing you drool on about it.

Anyway, It is understandable to me that someone plunking down over $400 on a video card might want a second opinion. I can't see screaming at someone for that.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went ahead and ordered the Sapphire x850xt(OEM) from monarchcomputers. They had it for $475 shipped. And incase you guys are wondering, I pretty much built my system from the suggestions from a lot of people here at Toms. Can't wait to get this card and start gaming again. Thanks again for the help guys.

LOL!! That's funny. There is a lot of great advice in this forum, but giving it takes a tolll sometimes. Maybe rx is just tired of answering questions like that. It is kinda weak after all, I figured out that x850xt was a better card before i joined the forums here by reading the THG reviews, but I guess sometimes hearing it from someone has a certain value. Over all it's great here, this place is like a nice warm security blanket for people with concerns about there purchasing decisions

The top card for PCIe is X850XT. Of the two you are looking at. X850XTPE is top dog.

just to let you guys know. I did order the card and they said it was going to be 5-7day shipping, but when I got the tracking number, it looks like they messed up and gave me 2day shipping at no extra charge. I will have the card tomorrow, hopefully right after I get back from fishing. If anyone wants to see real world benchmarks, just let me know. I have 3dmark03 and 05.
