NeXt Splinter Cell to be PS3.0 only?

Well Hanners is reporting it, and it's been all over the 3Dcentre website, it appears that Splinter Cell Chaos theory will be PS1.1 and PS3.0 only. No option for PS2.0,

Check it out on the front of EB;

It is unlikely that this is for any reason other than the "TWIMTBP' program, even if you bring FP-HDR into the equation. The funy thing is that by doing this they aren't just cutting out ATI owners, but all the FX owners too (well they'd probably be playing PS2.0 forced to PS1.1 anyways). And if it is to implement HDR, then you can count out anything below the GF6600GT for any kind of performance.

It'll be interesting to see if they add PS2.0 support for the final game, but grumblings are they probably won't. Truthfully this may be one of the few games that WOULD be suited for SM3.0 and FP-HDR, in that Splinter Cell is your classic low FPS creeper game, that makes great use of light/shadows (more so than D3 IMO). Considering there's already the Xbox version out too, it's obvious which markets they are focusing on short term with the 1.1 and 3.0 support.

Some people are saying that it shows support for PS3.0 when a GF6xxx is plugged in an PS2.0 when an R9800 is plugged in so this may simply provide options based on DEviceID, but that's not what's being said in other forums.

Well its kind of a war between Nv and ATi, so this could be expected with some game. It was the same story with Doom3 and HL2.

<A HREF="http://www.forsaken-game.com/" target="_new">Half-Life2:Forsaken</A>

Some Screenies that show HDR;

<A HREF="http://img83.exs.cx/img83/9317/sc3pic13td.jpg" target="_new">http://img83.exs.cx/img83/9317/sc3pic13td.jpg</A>

<A HREF="http://img118.exs.cx/img118/82/sp35lu.jpg" target="_new">http://img118.exs.cx/img118/82/sp35lu.jpg</A>

<A HREF="http://img25.exs.cx/img25/1170/splintercell320050219232td.jpg" target="_new">http://img25.exs.cx/img25/1170/splintercell320050219232td.jpg</A>

Also some PS1.1 to PS3.0 differences;

<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=2116wq.jpg" target="_new">1.1</A>
<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=2306us.jpg" target="_new">3.0</A>

<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=4114vo.jpg" target="_new">1.1</A>
<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=4301zn.jpg" target="_new">3.0</A>

<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=5116bb.jpg" target="_new">1.1</A>
<A HREF="http://img212.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img212&image=5303yg.jpg" target="_new">3.0</A>

And while the differences are noticeable, the presence and lack of lights would be the difference between 1.1 and 2.0, only slight differences between 2.0 and 3.0.

Well this 'leaked' demo at least starts giving nV something to hold out to the buying public as a carrot.

No, this is actually unlike D3 and HL2. Both had very close well optimized fallback paths, this on the other hand simply ignores the largest segment of current gamers (how many hav SM3.0 gear and how many have only PS 1.4 or less gear who are the buying public?). Considering this is a 'leaked' demo I'd say this game isn't due until the fall at the earliest so it's impact may not be felt for some time, but it will leave out alot of effects for gamers by makig it basically PS1.1 for the majority. Considering their target markets it may just be lazy coding in the demo phase (spotlighting Xbox and TWIMTBP for just this phase). PS2.0 may come later, but I find it amazing that they'd simply bypass 2.0 completely. When comparing the visuals this will likely be a pale comparison to games that come out later that do make use of SM3.0 asa standard.

I have the Multiplayer Beta on my desktop, it's a legit copy, not leaked or anything.

I haven't messed around with it yet, but I'll check the graphic options when I get home later.

It's not a question of officially announcing it, it's a question of sofar, no PS2.0 option in the demo, just 3.0 for GF6xxx cards and 1.1 for all else.

And that's what all the hub-bub is about. Is this just a quicky (aka lazy) demo with only the two extremes in it or is it a reflection of the final game. That's what all the stir is a bout, and why there's a question mark '?' in my statement.

So far there is no official download yet, it's only available on torrent, so be sure the multi-player beta you have is the same this as this Chaos Theory demo. When I get home I'm gonna start the torrent's a running and should have something by tomorrow (depending on #/quality of seeds).

The demo I have is official, just Beta though. I'm downloading the unofficial demo now and will load it onto my desktop when I get home and see for myself.

I played the MP demo once on my 9500Pro and it looked like Pandora Tomorrow.

For PT, the MP was developed by a different studio than the SP portion and looks much worse IMO than the SP does, so if CT is the same, it might not be fair to judge the MP based on graphics.

I think I'm gonna wait until the final version is released or an official announcement made before I get too upset.

I've personally always preferred the XBox version of Splinter Cell, especially PT on XBox Live. One of the best online games EVER!!!

I always thought that the PC version got the short end of the stick. The lighting and Shadow effects on the XB were more defined than the PC.

Oh I'm not getting too upset yet, just incredulous, first EA with their NFL hijinx, and this, that would just bother me.

As I was writing it I thought 'you know this is a PERFECT title for the advantages of HDR' so it makes sense topush the SM3.0, I just hope people are mistaken in the droping of PS2.0 support, because that to me would be a big mistake. I think potentially (just talkign sideways out of da' sphincter here) this would be even a reasonablly good game to involve even the multi-pass HDR that would be required by ATI hardware to achieve FP-HDR, because this game involves so much slow moving stealth, and is a game that rellies so heavily on shadows, etc. that really 20-24fps would likely be quite acceptable when creeping around. Probably worth the performance penalty for more realistic lighting/visuals.

Anywhoo, I hope it's much ado about nothing, but I'd hate to start having developers pick camps, it really just hurts the gamers more than anyone else.

*Edited stoopid sentence to make flow sense of good.

Well technically isn't the 1.1 the usual default path for the Gf4ti?

I know it supports 1.3, but from what I've seen no one codes for that so much as for 1.4 (Morrowind, etc.), so the PS2.0 would do little for you, and likely the 1.1 gives you what you'd have gotten all along.
However, that being said, yes it's time for an upgrade for you, and not just the 90day kind. :wink:
