Yeah, but only if you're playing the newest DirectX 9 era stuff (HL2, D3, etc)

The 5900 is still pretty good with older titles.

so i should upgrade?
even though the 6600 gt only has 128 mb
and my current geforce 5900 has 256?

maybe i should wait for the next gen stuff?
but then again the 6600 is pretty cheap?

The less memory is not a big deal when comparing these two cards. The 6600GT is more than double the performance of a 5900 and image quality would be much better.

for all intents and purposes the amount of memory is irrelevant.

i was assuming memory capacity of this card didn`t matter
but on nvidia`s web site the older geforce seemed to have more power
even though toms showed better framerates for newer games
on the 6600
i guess the 6600 is better for directx 9.0c games?

well, up until about 2 weeks ago i would have said XFX were pretty decent. the shortlist now contains Gigabyte, MSI, Sparkle, and ASUS.

problems with the XFX unit:
-!!LOUD!! cooling fan
-48C at idle, 76C loaded, in a thermaltake case with 6 case fans!! no excuse for it.
-didn't even break 3000 on 3Dmark05 despite the A8N mobo, AMD 64 3500+, 2GB @400MHZ, a a SATA 160GB HD.

maybe i'm expecting too much on the benchmark but the noise and the temperatures are just rediculous.

Yes, the 6600 is MUCH better for newer games.

As long as you have at least 128mb of memory, you're OK. 256 is nice, but you're not going to see more than a 5% performance boost. (if you're lucky)
