Hi, I have a really strange problem.

My pc starts up normally, until after disk checking....

right after disk checking is done, the monitor is just blank!

We brought it to the repair shop but when they hooked it up, it was perfectly fine. They even accessed device manager and saw no error icons.

But when I brought it home and hooked it up, ... same problem!

tried booting into safe mode?

sounds like windows is booting into a resolution/refresh rate that your monitor can't handle.

If you can boot into safe mode, set the display properties to something your monitor can handle and reboot it.

forgot to say - to get into safe mode keep pressing F8 just after all the initial POST information (memory test etc).

You should get a menu pop up offering safe mode as an option.

Yeah, actually my monitor is OLD.

I got into safe mode, and went to display properties, and the dial was set to the setting less than 800x600 hehe.

So now that it was set to the lowest possible resolution, I restarted the pc but still the same problem.

How do I fix the refresh rate thingie?

oh, and I forgot to mention that I just reformatted that pc.

After the reformat, everything is fine. I am able to get to my desktop.

The trouble begins once I restart.

hmm... come to think of it maybe it's because I used my special winxp installer, one that installs unattended and has a slipstreamed SP2. But the thing is, I created that cd based on my OTHER pc, which uses a much newer monitor. (maybe the settings of the newer monitor got "imprinted" on the unattended installer?)

hmmm I just re-installed winxp with my regular installation cd,.... but the same problem.

Right after the fresh install, I check my display properties and it's set at 600x800.

I didn't change anything, any setting.

aaaahhhhh........

it was the monitor all along .... (my 9 year old monitor)

(What a damn coincidence ... my monitor breaks down the same time my LAN goes awry hehe)
