The new system

Lemme start out by saying: DAYM!

This 3800+ screams in WinXP like I've never screamed before. (and I do scream like a schoolgirl when I'm excited!  )
Furthermore this absolutely stunning and classy Aspire X-Infinity case makes the whole system look like a dream car coming with all the luxury features inside.
It lights up the whole freakin' room too with its headlights.

The one thing about the X850XT PE that I must mention though is that it DOES do like some said and the FX5800 did, with that startup loud fan noise. In fact, when you turn it on, it's probably as bad as the FX5800 was, except this one's like a hotel hair dryer, ya know, those weak ones with the loud noise? Well it does that for about 5 seconds on a fresh bootup, and then suddenly turns silent. Amazingly as they said too, you never hear that loud noise ever in games, so I am left wondering what the heck is that hyper speed spinning for? It's not bad though, I don't mind it at all, it's actually funny to reboot often and hear a blow dryer that turns on and back to normal speed in 2 seconds.

One thing I did NOT expect btw, was that the Newcastle 0.13m chip would run so cool. My 3800+ is running, with the stock cooler (aluminum HS with an 80mm fan I believe) and 2 case fans from the Aspire case, at around 40-43º idle, but I have even seen it as low as 34º today. It is truly amazing to see such cool running CPU versus my old Palomino who ran at 50º idle.

The games are running awesome too. 6x AA and 16xAF is amazing and completely smooth.
I've tried 3dM05 standard and got 5518 3dmarks. I haven't compared yet though I think it's inline with current X850XT PE benches no? I'll also boost my RAM to CAS2 soon, as it was certified for it (Kingston HyperX CAS2 PC3200).

The HIS Platinum Pack is amazing too, tons of CDs, a lot of the ATi tech demos are in there, including screensavers. I've seen one of the X800 demos and it is amazing. (the statue in a temple one, that shows subsurface scattering effects)
The card also has a lot of connections included, not excluding 2 VGA adapters for the dual DVI card.

Including my USB hub, the whole system now has about 14 USB ports, of them 10 USB2! (although in actuality, 13 because of the hub using one port for itself, therefore making it 9 USB2 ports free for any USB2 device use)
Gigabyte includes a very nice suite of software and features on its mobo and I am most impressed by EasyTune 5's ease of use for monitoring and OCing inside Windows.

I admit I went overboard with the video card, it cost me a serious lot. Almost all the people I know that I told them about its cost were ready to pass judgement. But damn, I don't regret this one at all. I fully knew if I wanted the best, I'd have to shell out a lot this generation around, because of its current market issues. I was ready for that anyways.

Finally, I thought I would show yall some pics for the fun of it, and to perhaps get some interested in the case:

<A HREF="http://www.scamtron.com/Temp/Picture 034_7_1.jpg" target="_new">And now for the coup de grace: my baby!</A>

<A HREF="http://www.scamtron.com/Temp/Picture 042_9_1.jpg" target="_new">And now for the trophy shot, a nighttime pose of the elegant case.</A> PS: Beige? What's beige?

SchaweEet!

Nothing like having a fresh new system with fresh new install.

Maybe some benchies later after you've burned it in?

Just a question, isn't the memory supposed to be staggered? In <A HREF="http://www.scamtron.com/Temp/Picture 033_6_1.jpg" target="_new">your setup</A> isn't that running single channel? Or maybe I'm missing the colour coding (also make more sense to stagger them for heat concerns IMO).

Anywhoo, Cool Dude, enjoy!

You know, I been wondering about that dual channel thing at the time I installed the RAM. Me and my uncle were checking the manual, and we just couldn't get an appropriate answer from it. Are they really supposed to be in the different color codes? If so, my god there's even more performance to get out of this thing! We must rush and find out!

I gotta say though, it's funny how we tried booting it for fun with the current partition of the old system, as we wanted to test if it would boot up and work. Blue screen right at the splash screen lmao. Not even safe mode can enter. No frets, had backed it up anyways, so we do a thorough CHKDSK to eliminate any bad sectors and then format. Hehhe, no nVidia system with a VIA chipset likes a brand new ATi killer one with an nV chipset!

Dunno if you can answer this, but I have Smart Fan enabled in the BIOS for the Gigabyte, but the EasyTune software shows it as unavailable. Any ideas? I also wonder if Cool n' Quiet is even installed.

Ok wait a darn minute here, I just found out my card is supposed to get almost 6000 points in 3dM 05! THG shows that a 4000+ system gets over 6000, which means mine shouldn't be farther at all. Somethin's up here. Dual Channel not working maybe?

As GrapeApe said, you appear to have set your RAM up for single Channel.

CPU-Z can tell you, but certainly that config on my mobo (Epox 9NDA3J) is a single-channel one.

For the HDDs, yes, but I think the Optical drives aren't supported by SATA (apart from SATA-native ones obviously).

I did try an adapter when putting my Bro's PC together, but couldn't get it to work for some reason, so I'm probably not really the person to ask though!

On a side note, I BOUGHT (lol) the AMD 64 3800+ also and I'm glad to see you like it. What processor did you have before? I'm jumping for a 1900+ to this 3800+, hope I like it.

thanks for the pics ;) , I'm drooling all over my keyboard.

LMAO, that is SO me!

I'll check it out, I was wondering how come it seemed odd to put them near one another with such color coding and 2 slot grouping. But on the other hand I thought maybe the color coding helped know how to identify channels.

Well I look forward to trying that out then, if I confirm it's single channel. That'd kick ass, even more performance lmao.

I used to have the XP1600+. Thing ran at 50º lately with a Volcano 7 with 2 case fans. Amazing to see a stock cooling setup at 3000rpm with 2 case fans, running as cool as 34º.

I'm definitely loving this 3800+. Processors DO speed up your loading of Windows and programs, even though often I was told it's not that true. Hell yeah it is, launching Sound Forge in 3 seconds is what I call fast. I was installing all the ATi demos in instants literally as well.
You'll love this setup no doubt. Although without any case fans, the HSF may pass off as high pitched, though a mostly silent one.

What's the setup you're building, and the mobo?

Also, I do recommend the Gigabyte K8NXP-9 for all who are upgrading to an nF4, if you like features.

Thanks for the lovely comments yall.

Yeah now that I built my own system, I'm officially responsible for it from here on. Damn it! Gotta maintain the rig now...

That reminds me, does anyone know where I can get a wattmeter like the one on Guru3D?
I really need to find the exact total power draw my system creates when at full load (i.e. gaming or CPU intensive tasks) so I can assess whether what I have is going to overload my 400W UPS or not. I just can't take the risk and try it like this.

What can yall suggest?

Try a rent-all place, like United Rentals. They probably have something like a Fluke 'current' meter or something similar. You may have to settle for a clamp style rather than a plug meter, like some of these;
<A HREF="http://www.reliabilitydirect.com/multimeters/multimeter..." target="_new">http://www.reliabilitydirect.com/multimeters/multimeter...;/A>

I prefer Fluke quality, but you'll likely be stuck with what they got. Surprisingly enough check out Cash Converters and pawn shops, it's amazing what you find there man!

As for the Software issue with the fan controls, dunno. I only use the Vtune software for measurements not controlling, but I'll check what options are available to me when I get home, and see if I can find anything.

BTW, where's your benchies, ya lazy bastard? PCMARK, 3Dmark, Mark of the Beast, errrr, Rightmark!

It turns out Gigabyte uses color coding to tell you that two channels are one near the other, and therefore my memory installation was correct after all. Oh crap, no extra performance to gain there.

Now to find out why I'm not getting near 6000 points in 3DM 05.

Now for other benchies, be patient my purple primate friend, there will be some soon.

Hmm I think I got around 4800MB/sec for bandwidth. Kinda on the low side, as I seem to remember Gigabyte had advanced their mobo since previous models.

Might explain why overall my results aren't as high as I'd expect them to be.

I did find someone with the same card but with a 2.2GHZ CPU, having some better results if not equal as mine, so to me it does indicate my system needs some tuning or isn't fully optimized with the best drivers or whatever.

He's talking about making round cables out of flat ones. You buy premade, he makes his own.

As for SATA to optical, Can't be done IIRC something with signalling or something (there are SATA optical drives though if you want to buy one more thing), But SATA to EIDE HD adapters are available.

I was hoping for SATA to Optical as I have 3 good optical drives I want to keep and like freeing up IDE channels (keeping the WD Caviar 80gb for pagefile), but it looks like this can't be done.

Late to the show.. but wanted to say congrats.

The boot up fan noise is a shame, I'm sure they could change that with a bios update.. but must be there for some reason.

My GTs dont get loud on boot, they do windup as they warm up a bit in games.. but no where near the noise my CPU fan produces as it winds up  (3200+@2.45ghz) so its drowned out anyway..

in fact, I cant really say I've heard the video cards in my rig.. seems either the stock CPU fan or the rear case fan spins up whenever things get warm, drowning anything else out by far.

No cool n quiet running here

Bootup fan noise, albeit loud, is not really annoying though. Weird, but not annoying.

For me, I CAN hear the vid card spinning up during gaming, but only because now I am running only my HSF and PSU fans, without case fans. With them the vid card is not audible no matter what intensive 3d task is used.

I also have no clue when CnQ is working. Everytime I check my clock speed, it's the same, no RPM change as well, even though I DID install CnQ. What's up wid dat?

Ya. I for one am tired of the b!tches telling me how loud my GPUs are.. every gen theres a contingent that claims the newest cards are louder than ever.. but mine are probably similar in noise to yours (although mine are both single slot cards, so probably a bit quieter).

I run two 120mm case fans, one in front and one in back. The back one speeds up with increased heat, and it can put out alot of volume (along with the AMD cooler).
But everytime that has happened I'm usually deep into a online gaming session and have my headphones on.. so I notice it when I get out of the game but it eventually quiets down.

On CnQ, you have to have it enabled in the bios, have the A64 processsor driver installed and it should work with XP.
My mobo has an app that allows me to view CnQ status (mine goes down to 1ghz and 1volt anytime I'm not in games).
If you are running stock speeds it is very neat. I believe it simply drops the volt and multiplier dynamically.

Actually I am concerned with my own results here. 4800MB/sec seems a little too low for an A64 system.

AFAIK AMD still doesn't use DDR2 in any of their systems.

I would think that would be very low for that system. Have you benchmarked more than once? Also, did you make sure that you had all open programs closed? I always go into my task manager and make sure that I have everything that I can closed. One open program will kill your score.
