Hello to all,
I have a new MSI 865PE NEO2 LS, MB for a new system and will give the kids the old one. I am running Windows XP and with the new registration that MS has for this OS I was wondering if I will have problems just transfering the Hard Drive over to the new system? I have read when XP came out MS made it so you could only make so many changes to the computer before XP would I will assume time you out to register it ?????.

Any input and suggestions on this project would be great. I also plan on replacing my Radeon 32 DDR with a NVidia 64 Geforce Ti200 card, should this also be any problem do you think?

I also just read in some other posting about having to boot from the XP disc and choosing R(repair) when changing out the motherboard. This is to allow XP to install new drivers ?? then you have to reactive the product. Any feedback and heads up information would be appreicated.

Thanks to all for passing on their knowledge to us you like to just tinker once in awhile.

James

Firstly, to try (again) to dispel the myth about activation: You can reactivate on a COMPLETELY different system a couple of times with no bother, it usually takes several major changes before activation will ask you to phone the MS helpdesk. So you should be fine.

On the other hand, all operating systems install certain files, particularly drivers, relating to the hardware. Changing the motherboard is pretty major and XP likely won't boot afterwards.

You may need to do a full reinstall on the system, but you'll probably get away with just doing a repair install. Be prepared to call the MS activation line (an automated touchtone system) to reactivate in case you can't access the Internet.

Thanks for the info on activation and the changes I will be making to the system. You are right I am doing a major change P3-733 to a P4-2.4 800FSB, 400 DDR, new graphic's card but old at this point GeForce3 Ti200 64 but I thought I would have building a new system slightly before now and it is laying around still in the box, (may install this into the old system first to get it established in the OS).

Reading the other postings I was feeling pretty good with the posting of not much trouble getting MS to reactivate XP.

Thanks again
