Anyone see (I think this is right) Seventh Samurai by Kuroshawa? Is it true that it's the source material for Star Wars? Actually I know that's true, but I haven't seen the movie and was wondering if it's really evident. I want to rent it.

Requiem was absolutely amazing.

Simultaneously the most disturbing and most beautiful film I've seen in a long time.

Yeah, I just saw it a couple days ago for the first time.

It could have done without the vein scenes, but then again it couldn't. That three movies I listed should be mandatory high school viewing. Would solve a bunch of our social problems. At least it would enlighten people before it's too late.

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions guys and gals. However, I almost watched every single movie posted, excpetions include 'braveheart' and 'requiem to a dream'...i may check them out. Any other suggestions on some kick ass movies??

BTW-Im quite suprised nobody mentioned 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'...that has got to be my most favorite movie of all time (right now)...plus that Ziang Ziyi chic is cute!!!

Thats quite a collection you got there. Although I think the lemons you were referring to were "8mm" and "Unbreakable"...those two are one of the crappiest movies I watched...where it featered big starts, but the movie just plain sucked!!!

Hey, I hear "Being John Malkovich" and "The Bone Collector" are pretty good. What is the first movie about and what are your thoughts on both of them (give a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is horse crap and 10 is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"??)

Haven't yet finished watching BJM and Bone Collector was pretty good - not phenominal but pretty good - maybe a 7. BJM is basically about this guy who lives in a kinda wierd world and has all these bizzarre encounters. What I have watched so far is really good. For the 1st hour or so I'll give it an 8.

On my scale of 1-10 Crouching Tiger only gets a 9 by the way. It is a really great film, great cinematography and locations etc. but I figured a good 1/2 - 1 hour too long (the desert scenes and all could have been handled in about 5 minutes IMHO)

I have to say, as I see these lists posted over and over, I see several flicks that people consider 'good' that just made me sick to see considered a good movie.

The movies that I've seen and that I'd personally retract from the list of good movies are:
Interview with the Vampire
Stigmata
Titanic
Big Daddy

Unbreakable sucks, 8mm is not so bad
BJM is one of the worst movie I've ever seen.

Peteb, you should also condider getting The Messenger and Gone in 60 seconds

BTW, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon do not diserve more than 3 on a 1 to 10 scale (IMO). Some of my friends loved it while I can say I almost fell asleep...

Here's my take on Crouching Tiger:

1. IT'S NOT THE [-PEEP-]ING MATRIX!!!! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Most people who said that have never seen a martial arts film, and they don't realize that The Matrix (although a sweet movie), took martial arts movies and blended it with a little street/gun fighting. Well done, but not completely original.
And yes, I [-peep-]ed myself, it wasn't actually censored :)

2. Most (not all) of the people who simply said "boring" are the uncultured clods who can't appreciate foreign film. For example "It's a Beautiful Life" (correct name? Been a while). Now, that's not true to everyone, so don't take offense. Especially hmg57, I'm not posting this to say you're an uncultured clod. Although you might be, who knows. lol

3. The cinematography rocked. Nobody disagrees with that.

4. The flying was unrealistic. Get over it, it added to the movie (IMHO). It is Hollywood after all, is it not?

5. Subtitles are WAY better than dubbing. I love hearing the original language. If you can't read fast enough, take a speed-reading class :)

6. The acting was superb. If you don't think it was, remember that it's a tonal language and a foreign film. Then watch it. Repeat as necessary. Hehehe

Ok, sorry to bog down this thread, but I just had to get that out of my system.

I have to agree with you about CTHD. (Hmm ... for a second I was afraid I was going to end up with Cthulu. Heh heh.) To appreciate the movie though, you have to not only understand the that the film is foreign, but also the culture behind the film itself. Yes, the flying seemed fake to us, but in several forms of martial arts it is believed that when you are in-tune with your Chi, you can do things such as lighten your body or move your muscles to near the speed of thought, to do exactly what they were doing in the movie.

Westernalization (Is that a word, or did I just make it up?) evidence of this is also supported with the "Stiff as a board, light as a feather" chant game.

So, to steal a phrase that I kind of liked, only an uncultured clod would have disliked the movie because so much of it would have been beyond their knowledge that it wouldn't have made the same sense that it would have to a cultured clod. :)

Oh, and I almost forgot:

7. No, they did use wires, they didn't actually do all the flying in the movie, and they weren't really balancing on bamboo.

Here's a bonus - Tom Cruise did NOT do all the rock climbing in MI2, either. I've seen pictures of the guy who did, though. He's really good.

One of the critics bashed CTHD for using too much CG. It was wires though and the CG just took them out. I think Michelle Yeoh broke her foot during the shoot and was out for 3 weeks. It's on the DVD commentary. I can't remember exactly. I love that movie though. The dumbasses who critisize it have 1) never seen a real martial arts movie before 2) know nothing about asian mythology 3) are blind or retarded or 4) too westernized.

Some other movies for DVD

-Princess Bride

Another possibility.

Mr. Nice Guy (Jackie Chan)

Not the best movie for acting/story, but definitely one of the funniest martial arts films I've seen. Good stunts too.

I just watched "Braveheart" the other night and it was awsome!! I wonder why I never watched it when it first came out in the theatre...the story was awsome, the acting was great, the killings and battles were raw!! and that French chic was hot!!!
I give "Braveheart" the official Golden Sticky Finger award!! A 9.7 out of 10!

Hmmm.....what should I watch tonight????

Not only do I own Braveheart, but I have a cool story about seeing the movie. I saw it in the states when it came out and loved it, and by the time it was coming out on video here I was going to europe. It opened up in Europe the day after I got there so I had a blast seeing it in the theater again when it was already long gone in the states.

I love that movie. Fortionately nowadays the delay between the states and other countries is usually not the severe. I remember when I was little though, the delay was around a year. Sometimes 6 months if the movie was great.

I like what they termed as spaghetti cowboy. Movies with names like Christopher Lee, Clint Eastwood and the other guy, I seems to foget his name but one of his movies is titled Jango.

If you haven't seen 13th Floor, try it.

It don't come easy.......not always.

PS: If you want cowboys movies to tickle you, look for something with Trinity in the title.
