I have ordered a I8600 replacement motherboard to go in my dead I8500. What
are the differences/similarity in these models? Will my mobile Pentium 4 M
cpu from the 8500 work OK in the 8600 m/b?

They're similar but not the same. The CPU from an 8500 will not work in
an 8600, and vice-versa. The 8600 uses a Pentium-M and the 8500, a
mobile Pentium4-m. The two aren't interchangeable.

The drives, batteries, video cards, etc. all are the same between the two.
