I was wondering if anyone could comment on the difference in the ATI x800 and the x850. I just ordered an x850, but currently have the x800. Will I see much better performance than the x800, and with the new cooling design on the x850, do you think it will help to significantly cool the video card in comparison to the x800 that doesn't have the cooling design?

Thanks for your replies,

Eddie

In most cases, there won't be a significant difference between the performance of these cards. At least not enough of a diference to justify the cost in my book. Where the X850 will shine is in the higher resolutions with aa/af...

Let me ask a couple questions to get a better understanding of which X800 and which X850 you are refering to.

Which X850 are you refering to? Pro, XT, XTpe? The X850 pro is not worth the money as it is slower than a X800XL and costs alot more. The X850XT is a killer card if you can afford it.

Also, which X800 are your refering too. Do you have the R430 based plain PCI-e X800? Or are you refering to an X800se, X800pro, X800XT or X800XTpe? Alot of names, and knowing which is important.

If you have a plain R430 PCI-e X800 and stepped up to a X850XT, then yes you will see a difference as resolution and eye candy get cranked. 1280x1024 and higher with AA/AF, there will be a big difference. 1024x768 no AA, there won't be much of a difference. Anyway, it depends on the game and desired resolution and settings you hope to use.

If you had a X800XT AGP and went to a X850pro, it's a downgrade.

The card I ordered was the X850 XT Platinum Edition.

The card I had was X800 XT. As far as the cooling of the video card, do you think the newer X850 XT will be a bit better in keeping the temperature down?

Thanks for your help.

The X800 XT and X850 XT are built on the same process. I doubt temps will change.

Performance will be very close, too.

That was the assumption that I made in my previous post. Paul: Thanks for asking the question for clarification...
