As proved by the number of customers I've had in the last few days with Lovsan, pretty much nobody cares about firewalls.

In the hope that some people who shop at my place read this, I'd like to recommend a firewall: Kerio. There are two versions, one is completely free for personal use and is fully-featured and uncrippled. I used a free scan from sygate yesterday, and they were unable to determine that I even HAD a computer; not one scan turned up any positive results. I then turned my firewall off and tried again, and the number of open ports I had was startling. If I wasn't behind a router, I'd probably have contracted lovsan in the few minutes it took me to do the prelim scan.

Of course, just having a firewall isn't exactly great protection if you don't maintain it properly. A lot of people just allow any requested connection, which makes the firewall entirely useless. The best thing is of course to create and periodically inspect all the rules yourself, but if anybody wants to post their email address here I'll happily send them my config file.

If you want really HARCORE protection get a hardware firewall which will block ALL of your ports. be HARDCORE, get a HARDWARE firewall.

Or like me, a hardware firewall AND a software firewall.

You can't hack a computer you can't see!

(or at least, that's what I tell myself...)

You can check to see if your computer is secure from the outside using Internet scans. There is a free one one dslreports.com. Here is the link http://www.dslreports.com/secureme.

Another way: Install all available third party firewalls.
Zonealarm, Black ice, tiny, nortonIS.

Even better than that. Run a firewall/Router/Server linux box. Then run a LAN firewall behind that so that even if someone could 1)crack your firewall 2)crack your linux box
they'd still have to 3) crack your LAN firewall to even get anywhere interesting

God I love being a SAMBA guru. It's also lovely knowing your site is one of the most secure ever created.

Anyone who doesn't use a firewall and anti-virus program, doesn't matter what OS or if he's behind a router is definitely asking for T R O U B L E ! ! !

Better than that, just unplug your ethernet cable... hack proof :)

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Thats a good idea, although unplugging a network cable a lot would be annoying and would probably wear it out. I wonder if they make any kinds of products that can be used to switch on or off an ethernet connection? You could just turn it on when surfing or playing games, and it would make you look like a dialup user, and it would be instant on/off. It would dramatically reduce the chance of getting hacked.

You can manually enable/disable your LAN connection with NT/2000/XP. Simply bring up the list of your connections, right-click on the LAN connection and select 'Disable'.

If you design software that is fool-proof, only a fool will want to use it.

Certainly so. In celebration I feel you should disable your firewall, cancel your car and house insurance schemes, and then run out into the middle of a road shouting 'Im Invincible!! Nothing can get me!!'

Ooh, good idea. Sgame Im not the only one using this computer. I dont really feel that i could teach my parents how to disable and enable the network connection from Windows. However if there was just a large external switch saying 'On' and 'Off' Im sure they would figure it out
