I have a family member that has been struck by hackers. I looked to see if
the internet connections were protected by the MS Firewall and I can't set
it to be active. It has a message that says the following: "For your
security some settings are controlled by Group Policy". "Windows Firewall
is turned off. Your Net Admin is using Group Policy to control these
settings". They have cable internet connection and wondered if that is
controlling the firewall function.

Any hacker that did that would also bar access to the utility for Group Policy. (GPEDIT.MSC) Certainly you cna change the setting if
you have access to this utility, but you are probably better off just saving data, and reinstalling all.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I understand that WinXP Home does not contain
GPEDIT. Apparently you can make changes in the registery but I really don't
know where to look there!
Thanks,
Jack
