I'm in need of a way to save and restore the desktop icon setup in XP
SP2 (without having to go to System Restore). There used to be a file
called "ShellIconCache" that was perferct for this purpose, but I see
it's no longer there any more (yes I've made sure I can see hidden
files). Can someone suggest a good alternative? TIA

Delete IconCache.db

IconCache.db. A hidden file located in...

%homepath%\Local Settings\Application Data

After deleting IconCache.db, it will be automatically recreated.

HOW TO: Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302347

To display Hidden files and folders...

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options | View tab
Check:
? Display the contents of system folders
? Show hidden files and folders
UNCheck:
? Hide protected operating system files
Apply | OK

[[Hidden files and folders will appear dimmed to indicate they are not

Wesley,
Thanks for the quick response.
I found a file named "ImageCache7.db" but none named "IconCache*.*".
The file ImageCache7.db has a 0 byte length. I tried copying it, but
ended up with ANOTHER 0 length file. What now?

Wesley,
Thanks for the quick response.
I found a file named "ImageCache7.db" (created 02/05/2005) but none
named "IconCache*.*". The file ImageCache7.db has a 0 byte length. I
tried copying it, but ended up with ANOTHER 0 length file. I DO have
the two Folder Options settings you mentioned. What now?

I have no idea what ImageCache7.db is.

What folder is ImageCache7.db in?

Do a Search for ImageCache7.db | Right click ImageCache7.db |
Select Open Containing Folder | Highlight the Path in the Address bar |
Select Copy | Paste into message

Sounds like something from a 3rd party program.

Reboot and then do a search for IconCache.db.

Wesley,
I've checked 3 XP Home systems (2 up and running & 1 not running).
None has a file named "IconCache*.*". The other file "ImageCache7.db"
properties says "unknown application". Now I know not to worry about
IT, but I sure would like to know where the icon cache is. :-(

Paste the following in Start | Run | Click OK | If you get a Caution popup,
just click on Cancel.

%homepath%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db
