I've been trying my hand at board repair for the first time this week.
I had some sound issues with my Piranha board, so I started looking
over the schematic. Seems that there's a 6301 chip missing from
position 1K on my board.
Is a 6301 a rom chip that would need to be programmed with the correct
image file to produce the sound I need? I suspect it is. If that's the
case, how can I go about getting a 6301 and then getting it programmed?
Do ocal electronics stores carry that type of chip?
Thanks in advance for any help. I've come a LOOOONG way in a year. I
would imagine that within another year, I'll be the one answering these
types of questions instead of asking them.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. But I *think* it might
be the same sound prom as Pac-man. Yes, it needs to be programmed.

That's a bipolar prom... it would need to be programmed...
It may be the same as 1M on pacman...

Thanks for the help, guys. I truly appreciate it. And the link for
arcadechips.com is very handy. Do they program them with whatever you
ask for? Or do they require you to provide them with the code you need?

Check with Bob Roberts on burning one - he might be able to do it -
www.therealbobroberts.com - I know he can burn some chips (and not with a
soldering iron like me ;-)
Also - you might wanna verify the specs on that chip with Dave Widel
(www.widel.com). The dude knows damn near every bit and byte of Pac Code,
and I have one of his 4-in-1 MsPac kits running on my Piranha PCB.
Another possible person to ask about burning the chip would be Scott
Brasington www.brasington.org/arcade - another superhero to this hobby, like
Roberts and Widel.

The 3M bipolar on Pac is the same as 5C on Galaga,
but the 1M on Pac is not shared with Galaga.
The 1M sound PROM on Pac is used by Piranha,
but I don't know if that corresponds to 1K on the
Piranha PCB (as I don't have one to check).

Where would I find the image that I would need to program the prom?
That is, if I bought the chip from someone like Bob Roberts, from where
would I get the file I need on that chip?

1K on a piranha board does map to 1m on a pacman board. I'm not sure
if it's been dumped for sure to know that it really is identical. I've
noticed some sound differences on the gdp boards, (iirc it was only
when running make trax and eyes), and the hardware is the same so it's
possible the data is slightly different. The pacman version will
definately work though. Here's a fairly definative list if you're
looking to borrow one from another board.

Just tell Bob you need a 1M PacMan PROM.
