Can't Write to Floppy (A:) Drive

I have repeatedly tried to write different types of files to my floppy
(A:) drive, but cannot. The message I always get is this:

Error copying file or folder - Cannot copy <filename>: The disk is
write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.

I have used several different disks and verified they are not
write-protected. My system is a Dell Dimension 2350 running XP Home
Edition.

Any help that can be provided would be appreciated. If you need
further information, I'll be happy to provide it so you can help me.

How old are the disks ??? have you tried using brand new ones?

Replace the drive. The sensor that reads the position of the write
protect shutter has failed.

Maybe the drive itself has failed? The little sensor that checks the
hole for write-protection may be faulty.

before you replace it, you should try cleaning it... prop open the door and
blow into it as hard as you can (preferably with canned air, but you can do
it the old fashion way too)... dust often collects in drives that are
seldom used and that dust can block the write protect sensor (just as a
write protect tab would block the sensor).

Have you double checked the diskette to make sure the write protection
block (usually a movable square, located on the bottom right side) is in
the correct position?
