Graphics card cooling question

I have a Geforce 6800 (not GT or Ultra). The question isn't necessarily specific to this model, but do the fans on video cards change the speed based on how hard the card is working or high the card temperature becomes?

Well sort of, it only actually has 2 speeds, 60% in 2d, and 100% in 3d.

Pretty much but its not variable but a couple presets, one mode for no load and one mode for under load.
