Er.. I think, maybe... we need the cards to arrive first...

But let's unilaterally pronounce R520 the winner until they do, just to piss Kinney off.

It's a bit earlier to be speculating, but as far as I've heard, ATI's transistor count will be about 30 million higher than the G70, both has 24 pipelines, but that might go higher, ATI has the advantage of low-k, so higher clockrate, but nothing's finalized. Nvidia might use the new XDR since they're close to Rambus on the PS3 development. If Rambus this time can create a ram that's stable and can push insane bandwidth, then great, if not... well bad news for everybody who used it.

I'm still a bit puzzled, GGP you might be able to answer this the non-low-k 110nm 6600GT made by Nvidia overclocks insanely, with the MCW50-T peltier cooling it reached nearly 700mhz, from the stock 500mhz. I haven't seen any ATI card from the ATI camp can go to 700mhz without freon or cascade or even LN cooling.

I've heard rumors that the R520 has 24 pipelines, 32 pipelines, that it has 24 pipelines that are so advanced and that it works as fast as 32 pipelines, that it has 32 pipelines but will be released only using 24 pipelines unless the G70 puts up a challenge, etc., ad infinitum.

Really, nobody knows until the cards arrive. But if you follow videocard history, the number of pipelines seems to double every gen, but that can't last forevere and it's certainly no guarantee.

32 pipelines... I do wander how are big the die is going to be, you know it is only 90nm, kinda hard to keep die size and transistor count under control, unless they plan to go down 65nm.

I've heard something about 24 true pipelines and 32 virtual pipeline or something like that.

I hope Nvidia doesn't change heatsink mounting again, just making it a bitch for overclockers trying to mount waterblocks.

Yeah GGP whenever you get back or anybody who has an idea why the non-low-k 110nm on the 6600GT can reach 700mhz, while the non-low-k 110nm on the X800XL has trouble hitting 500mhz. I know there is a big transistor count difference due to the halved pipelines, but still 200mhz is huge!

We've gotta give Nvidia credit, they've kept their codename of G70 for such a long time, and even now we barely know anything about it. So it's either that Nvidia has managed to keep it top secret, or they're just so far behind ATI.

Of course they won't, and they won't be out as early as June. If they do come out that early, they won't be as impressive as they could be. I expect dissapointment..:)

Expect both to be on 90nm Low-Kd, since TSMC does not have a non-low-k option. So the G70 may become nV's first low-k product after all the 'too dangerous' fud.

The R520 taped out at around Xmas time, so like the InQ says expect the G70 around the fall. nV isn't paralleling the R520s launch with the G70 since the R520 is supposedly to announce in May and hit the market (probably as limited as last generation's cards) in June.

The design for the R520 that makes the most sensible rumour sofar is the 24 pixel pipeline + 8 flexible 'pipelines/engines'. This borrows from the R500 unified shader marchitecture, but doesn't fully abandon the standard design (which is too risky).

they've kept their codename of G70 for such a long time
Well we did know about it <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=429971#429971" target="_new">a while ago</A>, but I think it's not so much a secret as the typical "<i>were gonna launch the R400, wait scratch that, the R420</i>", type thing (was there an NV50 which is now a nice lexan ecapsulated paperweight?). The questions is how long they can keep the design secrets... ummm....secret. The Fudo's first credible rumours hit shortly after they taped out.

3Dcentre posted these 'collected rumours' a while back;
<A HREF="http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/2005/03-21_a.php" target="_new">http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/2005/03-21_a.php</A>

Unfortunately nothing about the NV50/G70, but more of an idea that nV will extend their GF6xxx marchitecture to 24pipes with the NV48, which may make the move to 110nm.

The funniest part of course is reading the XGI info.
