I've got a picture which I wanted to use as my desktop background
downloaded from my digital camera. When I go into Control
Panel/Display/Desktop and change my background, it shows the picture
as my background, although when I apply & OK the background hasn't
changed and I've just got a screen that alternates from white to grey!!
If I'm logging off from my user, the picture I've chosen comes up
briefly before logging me off.

Chrissie,

Are you using third-party themes / enhancers, or any utility (provided with
your graphics card) running ? See if switching to Windows XP Theme helps.
