HELP my laptop cant detect my modem

my compaq presario 1700 laptop (model 17xl265) has redhat 9.
redhat 9 wont detect my modem (a soft56k somethin like that). also, anybody knows what display it is? PLs help im tryin to use linux but its not making my life very easy
