Given that the anandtech review of the X800XL 512MB card showed very little improvement in a majority of the benchmarks (only HL2 was improved by more than 1%) I would bet the additional performance of a 512 MB 6800 Ultra would be similarly disappointing.

Not surprisingly, Anandtech does a pi$$ poor job of testing as usual.

Only at higher Res or AA would you notice any difference, 1600x1200 sounds stressful, but like like with SLI it's not enough to push these cards to their true limits/usefullness.

Now a better look would be that of TheTechReport, and as you can see it turns 6XAA in HL2 from unplayable to playable;

<A HREF="http://techreport.com/reviews/2005q2/radeon-x800xl-512mb/index.x?pg=10" target="_new">http://techreport.com/reviews/2005q2/radeon-x800xl-512mb/index.x?pg=10</A>

Still doesn't warrant a big dollar boost because it's utility is quite limited, but if you're going to test, might as well do it properly.

As for the GF6800U 512, you may find that SLI gets a bit of a boost since both GPUs were sharing 256 before and that much more power could probably take advanatage of the 512mb running ridiculous resolution, etc, same might be said for AMR and the X800XLs, but that's alot of money to spend to achieve that gain.

Interestingly enough in Riddick and LOTR there's another visible benifit in DriverHeaven's review;

I think there's alot more to this picture than what we've seen from the limited tests.

Beyond 3D's most revealing result is where the X800XL-512 outperforms the X850XT in HL2 @ high res+AA;

what i find truly remarkable is how high of resolution these cards can perform. it's truly amazing

but... why? the majority of people i know are on the move to TFT screen, and the majority of them 19" or smaller are liimmited resolution to like 1200x1024 or somethingl ike that.... so what if your video card can do 2000000x230000000 if yu can't even display it!

Too true, 1280x960 with 2x or 4x AA looks amazing, thats what i play HL2 in. You dont realistically need to go to 1600x1200 with a google AA as at that res, anything more than 2xsamples in 1600x1200 is very hard to notice.

Simple, the old low resolution LCDs are becoming a thing of the past. 25ms 1280x1024 is for value customers, where the LCDs cost less than the cards.

So what if you can't display it? These cards like SLI aren't for the budget gamer buying a GF6200TC/X300SE.

And considering almost all the latest 19" or larger CRTs out there can display 1920x1440 for cheaper than a cheapo 17" LCD, it's a pretty realistic target resolution to start considering for serious gamers (those cheapo LCDs you speak of don't play games well).

For reviewers to still be comparing these newer cards at 800x600 or 1024x768 without AA/AF makes far less sense IMNSHO.
