Error svchost.exe

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on a PC. If you need hardware specs let me know!

I keep getting this error, then strange things begin happening.

svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows, you will need
to restart the program. An error log is being created.

Where is the error log?

Some things that happen:

My right click quits.
Eudora goes banannas (mostly hangs on download of e-mail)
Web pages give 404s.

The viruses keep coming. but Norton slaps them down as soon as they hit. I just
ran a complerte virus scan on my drives and nothing was detected.

What is svchost and why does it give me these errors?
How can I fix it?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

All you have to do is... reformat the partition. I had the same problem when I was doing Ghost for a year without formatting the partition and jumping betwin XP and w2k like once a month or so. Nothing biggy, the drive needs a refreshment.

The viruses are under control. Norton took care of them as they were coming in, I thought. The full scan never showed any infections, but apparently something got in.

I installed Free ZoneAlarm and the SVCHOST.EXE errors stopped.

??? However, at this time I have SVCHOST.EXE blocked with ZoneAlarm. Is this supposed to be a good file (SVCHOST.EXE)? I havn't noticed any problems by having it blocked as of yet, but not completely understanding the workings of the file, I don't know if it is the right thing to do (Blocking It) or not. At this writing everything seems to be OK.

I have just recently upgraded to Win2K from years of using Win98, so I am fairly new to this OS.

My other issue is, I have a 3-machine home network setup (all win2K), and soon, I have to buy Zone Alarm Pro.

Thanks for everybodys input, it is much appreciated.

""are you dumb or just plain stupid."" - I am not sure about that one yet, but as far as error goes, I had it just one week ago, and no matter what I did (Ghosted XP, w2k, w2k3 back on the partition, had the same error, so I (as dumb as I am) figured that it is a drive issue and not OS, and got rid of it after "dumb format" of the partition. So that is why I made my comment about it, nothing ""dumb or just plain stupid" I can not see here.

Thenk yu veri mach smurt gay.

I have a form of this going on right now, 2K server. I ran adaware and allowed it to get rid of everything (probably a dumb move, I know) and when I rebooted I got the 60 sec shutdown message (I think it was svchost saying it). I searched the web and found there is a registry tweak I have to make (supposedly). But now even when I come up in safe mode, svchost.exe crashes and winlogon.exe crashes. Anyone ever heard of this? Not really sure if it's blaster. It seems to have started after allowing adaware to have it's way with things...

dude, you would be done long time ago instead of searching and asking around for "super duper puper" suggestions. save yer files, delete partition, format it, install windows and programs back, in max 2 hours you'll be back to happiness and never ask the same question again. don't listen to those stupid "try... yada, yada, yada" opinions, they help not, life has no "try" option, it has "do" unavoidability.

well, my apologies, i was not talking to you, but just for your super brain which requires lots of information in order to get to the point i will say it in different way:

if you NEED something, you have to DO something about it.
if you WISH something, you can TRY it before you DO take it.
the guy was in NEED so he has no TRY option.

oh, OK. You've got an excellent point. I should probably give up posting here, because what's the point? All I ever have to do is reformat. That'll fix everything! ;-)

Is this you blah? Not sure, maybe there's a better one. Have fun looking through the index.

jeeez, why is it that you have to get so much information in order to understand something? all i was saying, that in this particular case he has no other option but reformat, it does not mean that all of you (and us) have to do it in order to "fix everything!;-)", kapish? IT IS JUST THIS CASE!

i did not start flame war, i just gave the guy bestest way out of his particular situation, and you, you own self, blamed me for it, so this belongs to you as well ;)

who are you talking to? Me, or the original poster. You're mixing first and third person (dude, he)? If your objection was to the original poster then you clicked on the wrong reply button.

Anyway, Right back atcha...
