Hello all,

I am in the process of building out a nice, shiny new AMD64 system. This will serve two purposes, firstly as a MythTV/PVR box that I can use to watch/record TV shows. Hence, Id like it to be quiet as possible. Secondly, I want to play Doom 3 on it :) So what I need is advice for a decent graphics card that is whisper quiet if possible, so I don't have to listen to fan central while watching TV.

Thanks in advance,

What's your budget? Do you need AGP or PCI-e? There are alot of choices with passive heatsinks now if your little box has good airflow. Gigabyte even makes a X800 and X800XL as well as GF6600GT and GF6800 with passive heatpipe cooling. There was a 6800GT silent pipe model at one time. Then add a decent tv tuner/video capture card.

Anyway, on Gigabytes website, look for models marked as "Silent Pipes". Otherwise, stepping down in budget to the $100 marker, and you'll find 9600 pros with passive cooling. Definately won't be up to GF6600GT performance though. One other option is a Sapphire 9800 pro Ultimate Edition, which uses the large passive Zalman cooler.
