I don't know if any of you checked this out, it's actually old news, but I couldn't find any threads about the dissappointing performance of Doom 3 on Macintosh.

Pretty pathetic...

Yeah I seen some tests a while back. It doesn't make sense, not if you're running a dual G5 like that system anyways.

Well, they said somewhere in the article, or the other one that Macworld published, that PowerPC isn't as good at certain critical operations as the x86 chips are, which kinda makes sense because Doom is very CPU-intensive. But yeah, the numbers looked pretty miserable IMO.

I missed that one.(don't usually read the funny's)

Well, at least adding a $600 video card to your G5 will let you play at 640x480 quite nice. That oughta' look nice on those beautiful 30" Apple displays.

I'll have to show this to my macfanatic friend. He seems to think games run better on Mac than an Intel P4 3.x or Athlon64 system...

PWNT.

Funny how they think alike huh? It's almost as though they have secret underground meetings every so often to hammer out exactly what they'll preach to the masses.

Yep, Mac is definitely guilty of marketing hype and frivolous claims.

Didn't Anandtech do a test on it and they found the 32mb video card to be slighty chunky using Exposé? It would be kinda sucky to buy a mac only to find that it can't even run the OS smoothly.

That's really funny, good point that you make. Can't even use one of the new, overhyped features without problems. Apple is always skimpy with the graphics chip and you have to pay coin to get a premium one, only to find that the game library is slim (and Doom still runs like ass). And your mouse still has one button, even though it's 2005.

The thing that does impress me about the Mini is the power consumption, which is like 16-20W. Pair that with a 17" LCD and you can't really scoff at the electricity bill.

Too bad I hate Mac users. Here in NY, all of the stupid hipster trash walk around with their messy hair and vintage jeans and iPods and $1500 laptops that they use to check their email. *sigh*

In fact, let's discuss console games vs. PC games. THG has never had this discussion before and I think it will get a LOT off our chests.

If Exposé is the feature to hide windows on the side to see the desktop, activated with the F11 key, then I don't know why Anandtech got that, I use an 867MHZ G4 Uniprocessor and it wouldn't lag with it.

Expose is that feature that takes all of your application windows and resizes them into this funky collage. It looks neat but I don't think people actually use it that much. Show Desktop is definitely a useful tool, however.

Heh, I use kompose on Linux which is a rip of Expose and I find myself using it quite a bit especially when I've got a ton of stuff open.

Yeah that's the one.

Well, I have no clue why Anandtech would report sluggishness. If a Mac 867MHZ with 640MB RAM can do better than a G4 1.25GHZ with 256MB RAM, something is wrong. The RAM should not have anything to do anyways, and the Radeon 9200 is plenty enough for vector window drawing, which would usually be a CPU thing.
