With linux you get a ton of cool arcade games. Chromium is awesome, if you can get opengl drivers for linux from ati (i'm not sure if you can get them or not). For windows, Unreal Tournament is a good one, but if you only have one game, it HAS to be Halflife (awesome game), with the Counterstrike add on (the best multiplayer game out there). According to one thing I heard, there are more people playing counterstrike online at any given time than there are playing both UT and Q3 combined.
I'm sorry in advance but WTF is "19 inch flat screen made in the same factory as the veiwsonics"? Does that make a difference? Did you go to the factory and see this for yourself or did a salesman at Circuit City tell you that? What difference does it make anyway? If you had 17" Sony would we be telling you to get different games than if you have a 19" semi-veiwsonic?
If you have a 12" inch monitor get Doom cause it won't play on bigger monitors. If you have a 15" get Doom with the Simpsons add on pack. If you have a 17" Duke Nukem is the bomb. With a 19" only Half Life will do.
I am only being so shitty cause you got 2" more then me.
I tried using my monitor as a tv and dvd system. It sucked. I ended up spending a fortune on an entertainment center instead, but it's totally worth it. I don't think computers are meant to be entertainment centers yet... unless you have that Sony 42" or something similar. The sony 24" is an awesome start if you ever are looking into that.
BTW, I went from 14" to 19" and that was awesome...I'm not sure it can get better than that.
Anyways, since you're in college the computer will do. If you're living in the dorms or something similar, buy a tv card and hook your basic cable up to your computer. There are cracks out there that will decode the signal so that you can get EVERY channel off of basic cable. Have fun...
Yeah, I took a crap on your lawn. Whatcha gonna do about it?
But seriously, you have to buy an extra piece to play DVDs, which bites. At least you have a cordless remote (that sounds redundant nowadays), but still.

Well, funny thing is though, even if u do end up having to buy extra stuffs, at least u really can buy it in the US and not sit around wondering where ur parts are.

I know it is, he he. See, i assumed that the guy was ripping on the Xbox because he owns a PS or PS2 (those are the majority of the Xbox denouncers -- the other group is just plain M$ haters). So by him insulting the Xbox, i was trying to flip it around to him and insult Sony...better?

Hey, I'm an X-Box denouncer and I (reasonably ... err ... kind of) like M$. They were doing okay until WinXP anyway. And I'm not a Sony fan either. I prefer Nintendo. Heh heh. So I'm not a M$ hater and I'm not a Sony lover.
Yet I still say that the X-Box is stupid because, well, it's nothing more than a PC with little/no room for expansion and a customized OS. (Well, okay, so it has one nifty trick up it's sleave with the onboard video, but that's not going to help it much compared to a PC.)

Actually it looked pretty appealing to me, i dunno. I mean, short of Mario, M$ has liscenses to EVERY GAMING COMPANY (that includes FF, Crash Bandicot, Sonic the Hedgehog, EA (who owns a ton of the gaming world anyway), etc.). And the first few graphics teasers look very impressive. And the controller looked snazzy (i did not like the PS controller, i dunno, the N64 was really nice for that IMO). 8 GB hard drive impressed me (i dunno if that's changed), but there were a lot of nifty things that went into this. Plus i like Intel (that's no secret by now, is it? ), so i was happy to see Intel chips as part of this machine. But i AM still wary of stability. My initial reaction was "WHAT DO U MEAN? that's going to crash every day". But luckily they started from CE and not something like 98 or ME or something else very buggy I'll probably buy one after Christmas, cuz prices will go down and i'll have tons of user reviews to look at. One great thing is supply, u know. M$ won't have the prob sony had in terms of supply. Gosh, can u walk into a store and buy a PS2 YET (in the states that is)? i really don't know (no sarcasm, that is a general q ). I was looking for the N cube but...that may be iffy.

XP has potential, but is seriously FUBARed in a few ways. For example, notice how M$ keeps hiding more and more options. Soon we won't even be able to control what settings our hardware uses. M$ OS will just magically know all or something.
I already miss the days of DOS where I could just assign my own hardware IRQs and such without hassle. Each new version of windows, these types of settings are put behind yet one more layer of button-clicking to even get to. Soon, we won't even be able to find them even if they are there.
But on top of that, XP, from what I've read, is doing a number of things that just aren't right. Such as purposely hindering the sound quality from the MP3 codecs and intentionally leaving the new MPEG codecs out. That's just wrong. Now, I don't mind if Windows ships with M$ products bundled in. And I don't mind if some of those products are even integrated directly into Windows. (Such as IE.) So long as I can use whatever software I choose to use without hinderance. To intentionally sabotage this is to hinder my software choices. That I don't agree with and should have been left out of XP.
There are other XP quircks that I strongly dislike too, but at least most of them can eventually be turned off. Such as the default Start Menu operation.
One thing that really irks me about XP is how much of it is geared towards the internet. I don't need an OS that checks my email to tell me how many new messages I have before I log in. I don't need an OS with a built-in instant messager. I don't want an OS that keeps wanting to use my modem so often. My modem is only on when I say it's on, and that isn't often.

Sure was. So was freespace 2. But u know, i found it a frustrating game if u didn't use a joystick. And i do mean joystick. No keyboard, no gamepad, no racing wheel (yes i tried my M$ racing wheel for freespace, that was a blast, he he). Flight stick.

Yeah, I'm having that problem. I've been stuck using the keyboard for a while. So I think to myself about how I used to use my ThrustMaster MarkII FSC on my old P133, so I must have a flightstick somewhere in my computer part storage.
So I look. And I found it.
But Windows won't detect it and I can't find any drivers for it. I guess it's just too old for ThrustMaster to be concerned with supporting it.
So I'm still stuck on a keyboard.
Know of any good flightsticks to suggest for my next purchase? I seem to remember from a few years ago that Microsoft had a nifty looking one, but it was layed out kind of funky. I haven't been into flight sim type games for several years though, so I'm kind of out of the loop on what the latest kick-butt flight stick is.
FatBurger, I've grown to really love reading your posts! Seriously...
Anyway, I have the following games and these rock:
Strategy:
1. XCOM: It's very old and may not run on your system. Not sure why, but won't run on my newest Athlon system. I swear this is one of the greatest strategy games ever made even if the graphics aren't that great.
2. Civilization II: Not bad...got a steeper learning curve. But then again this often means better gameplay.
Age of Empires, Age of Kings, and the Conquerors expansion. Probably the best money I've ever spent on a game. I've played this series to death.
Shooters:
1. Unreal Tournament: Definitely a good game. I also have Quake III Arena, but UT is far better in my opinion. I uninstalled Quake III the next day...
2. Rogue Spear, Urban Operations, and Covert Ops: THHSE GAMES ROCK! I love hosting these games for multiplayer. I would not get them for single player.
3. Half-Life: Descent single player game. And fair multiplayer match, but UT is better.
4. Delta Force II and III. DF2 is VERY CPU/Graphics intensive. Don't get this game unless you have a high-end system! I preferred DF3 because it seems like the authors improved the graphics w/o increasing demand on system. This one runs much better than DF2. Overall descent games, but prefer Rogue Spear, UO, and Covert Ops by a long shot.
Flight Sims:
1. Microsoft CFS: Not bad...but no coop missions.
2. Janes WWII: Really fun because it has coop missions! I prefer this one over CFS
3. Falcon 4.0. Very cheap right now. This game is extremely complex and takes a lot of time to learn. I'm still learning it. It's tough because of its realism. Best games take time though...
Catheter and Caffeine IV are in place. Let's PLAY.
You got me. Flight sticks these days are all trying to be "realistic feeling". U know what i use? I use a 8 year old equivalent of a black stick with 2 buttons (old ch joystick). It was like the first "flight stick". See with games like freespace, u need to be able to change directions really quickly, so i don't like all the tension in today's sticks. Plus, since i usually have no deskspace and put the joystick in my right hand on my right leg (it's most comfy for me), i CAN'T have a lot of tension because of basic physics (my stick'll go all over the place). Man, i wish they'd just stay simple.

You seem to post in every category...and almost every message. Your like permanent fixture! Your always there! None of your posts have been distasteful (that I've read anyway) They are either informative or humorous...good stuff!
Taker easy.
Guess I am sort of a fan!

Yeah. I loved my old ThrustMaster Mark II FCS for the same reason, except that it has 4 buttons and a hat. I took off the rubber crap thst made it hard to move the stick and after that it was great. The only problem is that now I can't find any drivers whatsoever for the Mark II and so Windows won't run it.
I guess I'll go looking for a USB flightstick (maybe even force feedback ... not sure if I like the concept or not) some time when I get out to a computer store. Then hopefully I can test drive the merchandice.
