You will need to download and install drivers for your soundcard most likely.

depends on the hardware. what motherboard or soundcard do you have?

If you're using the onboard sound function of your MB you should have the driver on the disk that came with the MB. If you have an add on sound card it should have come with drivers on a disk. If you have neither disk you will need to find out what sound system you are using and go to the appropriate website and download the appropriate driver.
