My 7 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 is dying. I've decided to buy a new one. But as with any other electronic product, I'll need some suggestions.
Budget: Around 480 $ MAX or INR 30,000 MAX
Portable or Desktop Replacement: I'd say 50-50. Allthough I am gonna be using it a lot at home, I do take it around occasionaly, but for long periods. And, I'd like a tough one like the thinkpads, though I am not sure if Lenovo maintains the same quality as IBM.
Battery: Now, there are a lot of power cuts in my area, adding to about 4-5 hours per day. So, I'll need a laptop with atleast 4 hours of battery life.
Purpose: Programming, Multi-Threading, A lot of Multi-Tasking and Browsing, Movies. Generally, my laptop is on for 7-8 hours everyday. A quick boot up is preferred, but not at the cost of performance.
Gaming: Maybe. Although I play a lot of games, I won't use my laptop for gaming. I just got myself a PS3. But I do play games like WoW, CS, League of Legends, and a few other FPS, but gaming is not my priority.
Operating System: Unix/Linux and maybe, Windows
Storage: 250 GB MIN
Optical Drive: Any
How long do I wanna keep it??: Now, as mentioned before, my last laptop lasted for 7 years. So, I expect my new one to last for 5 years at the least without many repairs. This would be my highest priority.
Preferred brands: Asus, Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo Thinkpads (i.e., if Lenovo maintains the same quality as IBM) . Any other brands would be good, provided that they meet the reliability criteria. No HP please. And no Nvidia. I've had it with Nvidia chipsets. I had 2 other laptops with Nvidia chipset, both of which broke down within three years.
Sites: I am gonna buy at a local store, but, for prices, please refer www.flipkart.com
