What is YOUR most successful formation??

I`ve used the 4-1-3-2 formation a lot, but I can`t score many goals
using it. A lot of draws. Right now I`m trying a new 4-1-2-1-2 formation
but my players seem to position them very wrong if there is a counter
attack. Still fun to try different formations though.

I have no idea how the AI is now with the post-patched FM2005. But there were
times in the older editions a lop-sided formation worked wonders whether you
had good players or not; or if your club's rep was high or not.
By lop-sided I really do mean a formation that has no players on either the
left or right side, for the whole pitch or one section of it.

E.g. 3-2-2-3
3 defenders but no one to cover left. 2 DMCs, 2 midfielders to cover the middle
but no one is positioned on the left. 3 attackers but perhaps one is stuck out
on the far left while the other two are leaning to the right more than the
centre.
Absolutely bonkers IRL but did the job in the old games.

4-3-3. The 3 midfielders are wide, the central one is a DM, the 2 are
AM. The 3 attackers are close, the central one is a SC. It's not
always successful, you need to have 4 very good defenders. Once you
secure your defense the goals start flowing. You'll usually get scores
like 5-3, 6-2, etc, but I think that's fun.
Anyway, I was happy to make it work in CM01/02, CM4 and FM2005 and I'm
stuck to that since I love offensive football.

I've found that 4-4-2 diamond works well in FM, unlike CM where it was
a disaster. Put all the midfielders (including the DMC) and the
fullbacks on short forward runs, with the DCs staying back all the
time, and you should score plenty of goals without conceding too many.
You do need forwards/strikers with good finishing stats, though -
unlike the "crazy midfielder" formations, most of the goals come from
the front two (the AMC will get a fair share, but not enough to carry
a team), and if they're not good enough then you can end up with a lot
of 0-0 draws or 1-0 defeats. It's a bonus, though, if you've got a DMC
with good long shots ability, as he'll get plenty of chances from the
edge of the box.

Till now I've got the feeling that I can''t put my finger on a
Diabloesque-tactic with FM. Moreover, I have the feeling that the Formation
is less important than the individual settings in combination with the
players on the pitch.

Now I know that I'm a LLaMa, but I've got the feeling that analyzing
previous matches of yer opponent really can help with FM5

usually 442 with wingers, but my current team doesn't have decent wingers,
so I play 4-3-1-2 and drop to 4-1-3-2 past 70th minute if I'm ahead 2-0

For games where the mighty Stockport are playing Arsenal, Man United, etc, I
use a cautious 3-2-3-2 formation to mark the wingers.
I feel a draw is better than getting hammered.

Target Man Striker

Att. Mid Def Mid Att.Mid

Almost like this, the DMC is in the same line as the AMs (basically
he's an MC, but I always place a DMC with an arrow to the back).
The individual settings are pretty complicated, basically to cover the
defense that is pretty weak.

Hello,

I think the basic 442 with 2 wingers and some attacking mentality is a
pretty safe bet for any team.
On the other hand I get more fun with a 433 with 3 close DMCs and three
wide attackers (kind of like below),
a defensive mentality and counter attack set. You score a lot on
counter attacks but your goalkeeper will also
have his hands full (or the net)....

You'd have to play the long ball for that one, and teams that play short
passing would easily beat you (IRL anyway, never tried it on FM).

I always play short or mixed passing in my 4-3-3. I despise long ball
:-)
