From what I've seen, the minimum spec for this game REQUIRES DX9.
I find it weird that my R9500Pro is almost the absolute min spec for ATI cards. (5200 for NV)

I read a 64 MB video card with DirectX 8.1 native. That would include the GeForce 3, 4 Ti, and some other Radeons. It would seem very unlikely that the game would REQUIRE DirectX 9 card in order to play. There are still a lot of people that play games that don't have DirectX 9 cards. I would think they would lose a big chunk of sales if that was the case. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

GeForce 6600 (PCIe)
GeForce PCX 5900 (PCIe)
GeForce 5800 Series (AGP)
ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
ATI Radeon X800 PRO
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX)
ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 8500 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVidia GeForce 6800 GT
NVidia GeForce 6800

taken straight from the readme of the demo

it might only support, but DX 9 is probably the minimum

LOL, is that a complete list? It can't be with all the missing newer cards . But I am loving seeing the radeon 8500 (DX 8.1) listed, but no GF FX cards under FX5700 series. (5600, 5500, 5200) HeHe...hilarious.

Not so funny is the lack of GF4ti's.

People shouldn't be even playing games with sub-9700Pro cards!
There really isn't anything my 9500Pro hasn't been able to handle nicely. I'll admit, I wouldn't mind a more powerful card, but my system can run anything I throw at it more than decently.

Guess I finally have to upgrade my Ti4200. It served me well. Well, I was planning on upgrading it this summer anyways. Building my dad a new comp, so I guess I'll put the 4200 in there.

Actually the GF3 and GF4s are DX8.0 (no PS1.4) not DX8.1 which would explain why no GF4ti in the req list but there is the R8500. This is the first time I've seen that as a requirement, not just a recommend.

Surprising the FX5200 and 5600 aren't there though as they would be 'capable' card (FX5200 would need to be an Ultra though IMO).

lol, just giving you a hard time. I still have many GF4Ti's though. Soon my spare LAN gamers will be useless. :frown:

Side note, I had relatives over for the weekend and we had a blast doing 4 player NFSU2 outruns on the LAN. Oh what a fun game.

Yeah, if that's true, then there is a situation I never expected to see. A R8500 theoretically being able to play something that is a no go on the GF4Ti series.

Yeah exactly.

I knew of IQ differences (like in Morrowind), but never barriers to actual minimal play.

I didn't know Morrowind had an IQ difference; interesting. PS1.4 making the difference? I don't own that game.

Only difference I have noticed is a little bit better 2D Quality while using SVHS-out to a TV with a 8500 compared to a GF4Ti4200. I am temperarily using a Ti4200 while I was mounting a passive heatsink on the 8500.

speaking of BF2, I played a couple games last night. I didn't mess with the settings yet, just wanted to get a feel for the gameplay, And I have to say, I was not impressed at all! I'm not sure why the requirements are so high? I had no framerate issues, so I'll up the prettiness meter and see how good the game can look and report back.

Here's a little snapshot glimpse from [H] as to some of the differences between DX8.0/8.1/9.0 in a few games, unfortunately not Morrowind;

<A HREF="http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTUyLDE=" target="_new">http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTUyLDE=</A>

The main difference is the water effects including reflections and rain drops and ripples when walking through water (handled by PS 1.4) and there is also a form of HDR-like Bloom effect when you look at the sun. Truely very impressive visuals, even today, and what pushes it over the edge IMO is the PS1.4. Even X-play on TechTV did a visual difference demonstration that really showcased that shiny water.

Thanks for the read. Quite a few differences pointed out.

Somewhat OT, but here's a ? for you. I've been doing a ton of fraps benchmarking in NFSU2 and am curious if you have ever seen the codepaths used in that game explained and the visual differences of each. I can't seem to find a thing about it.

<A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=658042" target="_new">3DMark05</A> <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3781954" target="_new">3DMark03</A>

I have never seen an explanation for the visual differences in NFSU2, but then again I don't play it much. I'm still more of an F1 fan than a street racing fan so I rarely play it. Heck I rarely play my copy of F1 (pulled it out this weekend to do a 'look around' of the track in Montreal), so probably you'd have to ask people who play it more often. I'd recommend GW, but he's not around as much anymore (he's busy too).

Someone PLEASE EXPLAIN how a Radeon 8500 is a DX9 card and supported while a 9200/9250 is not???

"Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my drive?"
P4 3.0C HT, Intel D865GBF, 1GB Crucial PC3200 DDR, 2x WD 36GB Raptor 10kRPM, BBA Radeon 9800PRO, SB Audigy, Hauppage WinTV

No need for DX9, need for power and DX8.1, and technically the R8500 is more powerful than the R9200/9250 so maybe it didn't make the power grade.

They are DX8.1 not DX9. But the 8500 & 8500le/9100 are faster than the 9200. They might be including everything above the 8500 in ATI's naming scheme. If the 9200 is left out, maybe it just doesn't quite make the cut performance-wise with the 8500 just squeaking by.

But specifically, my HTPC has a 128 bit Radeon 9250 and the game refuses to run. It simply crashes back to desktop with a VPU recover after loading the title screen. This is with 5.6 cats, too.

My desktop runs the game flawlessly, I am absolutely certain the game could be run on low settings at 800x600 on a 9250 with acceptable framerates.

Yup, no doubt he'll be a gamer. He was proably 7 feet away just 30 seconds earlier, then I look over and his chest is on the pedal base, with the gas bedal in one hand and the brake pedal in the other, and of course he a puddle of drool right between them. He doesn't crawl yet, so it he tucked and rolled to get there.

Back on topic; So what is it with the 9250 and 9200? Seems it's just too weak. They are also PS1.4 cards, but are cut down versions like the 9000's. Is there anything in the spec chart that screams incompatible, besides just the obvious performance difference that would go with the specs. To my untrained eye it only seems it can be from not enough raw power and not a spec that is below what's needed.
