So one could expect the GTX to be about the same power as an 'X900PRO' (24pipe R520), considering the 32 pipe one scores near 10K supposedly.

I'd guess that is exactly what the GTX is equivalent to. Is there a chance that NV is announing the pro class 24 pipe card and is sitting on a ready 32-pipe Ultra model, ready to spring it if/when needed?

No I think nV's doing a two-tier/phase launch. They are going to launch their 110nm 24pipe card now, and ship it soon after it seems. Meanwhile ATi's card launch is far off, and delivery is even further off (likely 2-3months after the G70 hits the market). The whole time the 7800GTX is selling they will be producing their 90nm version of the card to compete against the R520.

Now with the move to 90nm they may add pipes to reach 32 or simply see what speed gains they can echieve by moving to 90nm (and likely low-k if they stick with TSMC). PErsonally I think on 110nm they simply don't have the room to move to 32pipes, and the size of the chip would be huge increasing the costs. I think we'll only see a 32pipe version of the G70 (G75?) after the move to 90nm. And I would boldly say that that part is not ready yet regardless of what ATi pulls out so there is no option for 32 IMO.
Closer to the R520s arrival in market you'll likely see the 32pipe card launched, or at least leaked to impact the sales of ATi's cards. Once again like the 3x/3xx generation you will see heavily staggered releases with both companies launching PR that makes people questions purchasing their card now, when there is something better promised by the competition on the horizon.

Edit: If you want an idea of what I'm thinking about with regards to the launch think of the 3x/3xx generation withouth the R300 (as if it never existed). nV launches the FX5800, and yet we know the R9800P is coming and expect more out of it so you would potentially layoff the purchase if you thought the next part was better, then nV launched FX5900 where people knew there was a redesigned memory interface, what else did they redesign, ok now I'll wait for that, then it launches, etc.

I think that's what's going to happen here. Unless one or the other is significantly lacking in functionality there will be PR/FUD and such around each NewEgg ETA date.

Yeah, the GTX name threw me a bit, but I kinda figured that they wouldn't be able to have done 32 pipes yet. Thanks for the explanation. I somewhat like the staggered releases, especially if they leap frog each other. Sure worked out good for use when they pushed each other with R8500/GF4Ti/R9500P&9700P.

Yeah I don't mind the staggered releases (although it would have been nice to start earlier with the original R520 launch date! ).

The only thing to anticipate is more FUD and crap than we've seen in 2 years. This past generation there's been the launches and then some FUD and PR and then silence up until the next launch. Now the FUD cycle will be nearly continuous as there will always be benifit either to the people lunching or the people selling, or the people launching to keep the other guy from selling, and then defense against that too. The one thing to keep in mind is my old Motto from that same period 2 years ago;
ATI sux, Nvidia blows, And Matrox Gives Multi-Head!

The only thing I've ever truely considered as a new sig, but hey, I like the Classics.

it still looks like the battle will be close again, but i feel ati will take the speed crown by a small amount as they will be releasing the cards after nvidia does, and so will give them time to eeck out extra performance from the r520.

It's going to be a while before we really know who wins this round. But one things for sure, X850XTpe is about to lose it's performance crown. I just wish GF7800 vanilla (assuming there is one) could beat it, making GT and GTX even faster, and forcing ATI to play all it's cards too, and get going on giving us an R530 as well as the XT's and XTpe's.

? I haven't seen a rumor attempt to answer is will 7800 vanilla be >, =, or < 6800U ? Then again, are rumors of a 7800 vanilla's existence even true, or will the 6800GT/Ultra just be NV's midrange for a while? Any answers guys?

Something's fishy here. What language is that site in? I can't read the particulars of the test. Did they use beta drivers, which are the only ones available for the GTX at the moment? If so, these results simply aren't credible.

I talked to an nVidia rep at a trade show this past week. He says they are doing away with the 6800 ultra all together and putting the 7800gtx in its place. They are keeping the rest of the 6800 line. Don't know if this sheds any light on the situation or if it just spreds more confusion.

Not surprising really.

Low 'ULTRA' yields, why bother trying to continue that piece if the GT is really the best market segment after the GTX.

Yeah, but remember Grape, the Huge advantage of buying the GF6 series because of SM3 and SLI future upgradeability. So much for adding that second identical 6800U when it's needed. Oh well, mine is AGP anyway. Just stinks for those who spent $250 more than me for that PCI-e version hoping to go SLI.

By the way, the Inq's new scores are 7600 for a single GTX and 11,200 for 2 in SLI. Other's must have been OC'ed.

Well you could always flash the Ultra to GT and pray that it works.

I'm sure those who bought the single Ultra (over the cheaper GT) in hopes of SLi will love that idea too.
