Trouble moving files

I've been moving a lot of avi's around lately and recently have been having
strange problems. For instance, I'll select a group of six avi's, right
click drag and select move. I watch as the progress dailog finishes to see
that two of the files are left behind. They are actually in the desired
folder as well and can be played no problem. I'll try to delete the two
stubborn ones but can't, they are locked by something. If I restart, they'll
disappear.

This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I've tried a program called
WhoLockMe. If I use this on a stubborn file it will normally show at least 2
instances of explorer.exe and if I kill the process the files will
disappear.

From this limited info can anyone tell me what's wrong with my machine and
can I get it sorted?

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2

Thanks.

Neil,

There is a known problem with .AVI. This page discusses the problem:

Thanks but I've read everything I can about this and I've already done the
registry hack but I don't think it applies to my problem.

The files don't seem to be corrupt as they will move and can be played from
the new folder. I also don't have a problem renaming them. The problem is
that whereas they all move, some stay in the original folder as well and
it's those that are locked.

I've come across lots of AVI problems in WinXP but can't find a situation
the same as mine.

It doesn't just happen with your files, I've seen it with picture files of
different formats too. And in Win98 too. Move less files at each transfer,
or kill the
process when it seems to stick at the end. I find ctrl-alt-del and killing
the process works as well as any
utility- better usually.
