I have asked a friend who does know about building PCs, got some useful info an another thread here, thanks. as he is on holiday, wont bother him, wondered about what 1U and 2U means. I did a quick Google but maybe its my techno deficient nature but still not sure how to choose one. I was looking at seasonic and flex examples but really just want to be clear on the choice as I want one ready for when he gets back in a couple of weeks.

1u and 2u usually refers to the height of a rack-mountable server. When you say "machine" are you looking at a desktop style PC or a flattish rack-mount server than is designed to be stacked...in a rack?

if you're looking for a desktop case PC and the power supply is listed as 1u or 2u it is a special shape that fits into flattened server chassis. a power supply that fits in a desktop case is called an "ATX" sized PSU.
