I am trying to build a system and could use some advice. I will be using it mostly for online gaming but also want to be able to upgrade it at later point as needed.

This is what I have picked out so far, comments welcome, I am a total rookie. This is stretching my budget so if there is any place I can step down or if there is any place I need to step up, let me know.

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 3800+ Processor with
HyperTransport Technology

Motherboard: ABIT AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro Motherboard

Memory: 1GB Alienware® Dual Channel Low-Latency DDR PC-3200 at 400MHz - 2 x 512MB

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 w/Digital and S-Video Out

System Drive: High Performance - Serial ATA - 160GB Serial ATA 7,200 RPM w/8MB Cache

Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: NEC® ND-3520 16x Dual Layer DVD±R/W Drive

Sound Card: Integrated 5.1 High-Performance Audio with Digital Out

Thanks.

Here's what i'd recommend
-Athlon64 3200+
-Go with a Epox 9NPA+ ultra motherboard
-memory go with 2x512mb of OCZ 3200VX ram
Go with a X800XL PCI Express video card
-drive go with a pair of 160G Seagate drives with NCQ so you can have Raid0 config.

scottchen's recommendation is good.
Those parts will make you a much better system.

On the DVD burner, the NEC 3540 is available at newegg, it's a little bit faster, but only costs a few dollars more.

Thank you for the input, I took your advice as much I was able to and came up with:

Power Supply: Alienware® 460 Watt Max Power Supply

Motherboard: ABIT AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro Motherboard

Memory: 1GB Alienware® Dual Channel Low-Latency DDR PC-3200 at 400MHz - 2 x 512MB

Graphics Processor: ATI RADEON™ X800 PRO 256MB DDR3 w/Digital and TV Out

System Drive: Extreme Performance - Serial ATA RAID 0 - 320GB (160GB x 2) Serial ATA 7,200 RPM w/16MB Cache

Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: NEC® ND-3520 16x Dual Layer DVD±R/W Drive

Thanks again!

That motherboard has a Via chipset and the best chipset is the nforce 4 ultra.
Are you building this or just buying it from somebody.
What's your budget?

Exactly what I was thinking. Why?
I think he's gonna buy it from a retailer.
My guess is that that system is gonna be cheap...
...but only for the retailer!
With the same money we could give him better options, but maybe he's afraid to build the machine himself.
