how to play sega model 1/2/3 games without a cabinet

hi everyone.

i'm looking to get started getting arcade games, but i unfortunately
don't have space for giant cabinets. i am currently interested in
getting the old sega model 1/2/3 games (virtua fighter series for now),
and was wondering exactly what i need to play them. i've seen boards
for the games making the rounds on the net, and sellers of such told me
to come here and ask you guys.

is there a machine i can get that takes the boards and hooks up to a tv
(i'm pretty sure there are some for neo-geo pcb's)? that i think would
be easiest. again, getting an entire cabinet is out of the question so
i hope the lack of one doesnt make playing the games impossible.

thanks a lot. :)

thanks.

would anyone happen to have any instructions on what i need and what to
do to set things up? i'm really interested in playing these games all
over again, specifically virtua fighter 1 and 2. :)

well, i've been a fan of the series and have played the existing home
versions. for some reason, they just don't do it for me. none of them
have been exact ports (unlike, say, the Tekken series, which went far
and beyond being perfect). even the PS2 version of Virtua Fighter 2 was
far below expectations.

i realize i may be just in it for the sentimental value of playing the
actual arcade games, but to each his own i say. so i'd appreciate any
help in this regard.

i know of one guy who managed to set up a model two board with virtua
fighter and other model 2 games... saw pics of his setup attached to a
monitor. unfortunately i forgot his name and website so i can't contact
him.

You can get jamma adapters for the sega model stuff mainly the third.
The first two youll probably have to build yourself. Also note that the
pinouts change between versions of the board (model 2 has four
versions) though. Right now i have a vf2 dedicated cab and just
purchased a doa board and a fighting vipers for it but since i have a
cab i dont have that problem.

One site to check out would be arcadebase.de because the guy has the
pinouts for model 2 and jamma which might get you going. Sadly
collecting these games arent cheap and also emulators dont seem to get
it quite right especial model 3 which nothing does that i know of.

umm... I don't believe so... The "machine" that you're talking about is
generally called a supergun and is a Jamma device.

The model 1/2/3 games have entirely different interfaces (even amonst
themselves, and even among different varients (model 2, 2A, 2B, 2C which are
different). It's not impossible to do but you'd have to rig it up yourself.

I know this isn't exactly the answer to the question at hand, but if you're
mainly interested in playing just VF 1 and 2, why not get a Sega Saturn?
Both came out for Saturn, and for all intents and purposes, are arcade
perfect ports.

there's a few emulators out there for these games. Save a lot of hassles

Jamma adapters, including audio ampli, are often supplied with Model 2 &
Model 3 PCBs...

It looks like this (Model 2B one) :
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6413/mdl2jammaaudioampli8os.jpg

I think there are minor differences on the pinout between Model 2, A, B,
C...
Only one Jamma Adapter for all Model 2 versions should be okay.

Now you'll meet a big problem to play Model 1, Model 2 & Model 3 on a TV,
through a supergun :
all these hardwares use a 24KHz horizontal frequency (Medium Resolution)
where standard TVs use 15KHz...

In view of getting these hardware working, you'll have to find an old
monitor that accepts 15 and 24KHz (I heard that X68000 monitors are okay for
example), or an arcade monitor used in cabinets...

I'm still looking for a way to use Model 2 on TV using something like a scan
converter...

Nope, this is the reverse...

The converter here is designed for Mame Cabs, not for playing Sega Model X
on TV :)

so i just pretty much buy the necessary model 2/3 hardware, hook it up
to say, a super gun via jamma adapter, and connect the whole setup to a
plasma tv like yours?

if that would work, that'd be just great. :)
