Hmmm! My 7800 just totally flipped its wig. I turned the system on and everything loooked fine until after the window XP logo. When the desktop came up, "MY WHAT A RAINBOW!" After pulling the plug and the card and then reinstalling the card its back to normal. I dont think it would be wise to wait and see what happens, i think an RMA is in the works.

It may have something to do with my plasma TV. This is the first video card that has really impressed me with its software thats geared towards this type of display. I may be way off base, but ive got a feeling that alot of work is yet to be done before video cards get to where they are presently with other displays. This just isnt an area that I have enough knowledge in. Im not going to knock the card, this is the only one that I have heard of that has done this. I wouldnt be so eager to RMA if they didnt cost more than a total system can be built for.

My plasma has a 15 pin that is much better than S-video. Its also better than composite. I was just about ready to grab one of the HDMI to DVI cables but now im on strandby.

For me it's more like using any LCD at work would hurt my eyes. It still does at home, but much less than before. As for CRTs, now without my glasses, I'm as good as asleep.

My eyes are super sensitve to all of the negatives that a CRT may produce. I looked at LCD's forever and the only ones that I could stand to look at were up in the $3000.00 range. If there is a fault be it the Rainbow effect, ghosting, or many others my eyes will pick it up right away. Of course this really blows. The plasma ended up costing me around $2100.00 with a full 5 year warranty that even covers lightning.

Yeah I am uber sensitive as well.

Eyes spot ghosting and it easily ruins it for me. Yet I kept this 16ms 20.1" LCD, for many reasons. However most people claimed to see little to no ghosting on it, yet I spotted it right off.

I always hear of the rainbow effect and I think I do know what it is, but does anyone have any pics to show that would make it obvious?

The coolest thing with LCDs these days though is the anti-reflect filter screen added on most new models. It boosts the image quality by a mile, makes it brighter, deeper, and much more vivid. Glossy's always cool!

But no matter what, I still think plasma's the way to go. Aww gawd, I still haven't recovered from watching huge LCD TVs at Futureshop, advertised for such high prices and yet the content was delivered in low resolution, so the interpolation was horrible to the point of even distorting and making some things unreadable or perceivable. Add to it the fact HD is barely yet mainstream and your investment just started off pretty badly.
Seriously, there's those and the old large screen TVs found in the past for home theater systems. Those had such horrible angle of vision and yet people liked them. I could never grasp why! Seriously, I think Plasma's the best option from here on, given its more flexible resolutions IIRC, not to mention unbeatable image quality and very fast response times. I've yet to see a reason why LCD TVs will win.

I dont think that its easy to pick up the RAINBOW effect in a pic unless its really bad. Not sure about that. Trust me, if you saw it you would know it.

You couldn't show the rainbow effect in a pic because it's a sequential colour frame issue due to the colour wheel. You could show a rainbow-like shot in a picture but it wouldn't be related to the issue you are talking about that plagues DLPs (although they are getting better).

I too notice the rainbow effect on motion mostly (it's fine when doing presentations at work), which is why LCOS is so much better, no worries about that. Of course Plasma is sweet but we know the drawbacks there. Sofar no 'perfect' replacement for the CRT IMO, but I hold out hope for improvements in all areas.

Well they did improve a lot on plasma burn-in issues from what I gathered. And you do have to wonder how often do people really keep their TVs locked into one single picture without movement for days?

Finally, if you get a long warranty, then what's the worry, really, it'll be serviced and off it goes.

Is it the thing when you see a lot of stripes on TV, that are of two colors, like black and white, and then create a weird distortion with some rainbow-like colors coming out of them?

Or is it the one where if you move your head fast enough away and look back on the screen, you sometimes notice a brief RGB color spectrum in front of you which disappears quickly?

Uh, well people like my dad were 'burned' (pun intended) by early adoption because MOST of his TV viewing involves CNBC, CityPulse24, ROBTV and CTV NEWSnet; those scoll bars burn in pretty damn quick and pretty damn bad, and no one had the warning until almost the third year of intital sales, about a year too late for him.

Sony has one of the best warranty / customer service policies in the industry IMO, but even for a $10+K first generation plasma it was pretty bad and they wouldn't do anything for you, thus the move to LCD projector for him (another Sony though). No one will warranty against that, perhaps mozzartusm found something different, but I think all of them have the 'be forwarned' clause.

Don't kid yourself with the 'new protection' though, we have Plasmas all over the building at work, and ALL of them (even the newest one that's about 9 months old) have burn in of our Logo and the time clock in the corner. New Plasmas still burn in rather easy, they just have better screen savers IMO and slightly better resistance, but that's like being slightly pregnant IMO.

Those scroll bars though are just KILLER on Plasmas, all of which STILL carry heavy warnings about that type of viewing.

EDIT: The rainbow effect is like bit of the RGB spectrum occuring onscreen withouth moving. This happens because the colour wheel is moving and your perception is a little fater than most people and you notice the colour shifts, strobing, etc. They have improved alot on the issue by speedinig up the colour wheels on DLPs.

I wasnt sure about it showing in a pic, I knew that I had never seen it in a pic. It looks like it may be a driver issue. Probably doesnt effect many displays. It hasnt done it again, but im sending it back anyhow. I havent decided if I would rather get a refund or just exchange it for another one.

OH, yeah, sorry I wasn't think about that rainbow issue. Duh, leave a thread un-read for a while and you lose track.

Started assuming 'rainbow-effect' and forgot about the other issue.

Not sure if your Rainbow issue would be reproduceable in a pic. Almost definiitely not in a screencapture due to it's nature, but you could probably get a pic of it since it would be something different on a plasma. Just have to make sure it's not a refresh/exposure conflicting issue of course because few cameras could catch that (refresh is awesome on the plasmas as I'm sure you know).

I figured out what caused the problem!!!!

In NVIDIAS display control panel there is an option to "NOT SHOW MODES THAT THIS DISPLAY DOES NOT SUPPORT". It doesnt block all unsupported modes. Im still a little confused because it had worked in this particular mode for a couple of hours and only screwed up on a fresh boot hours later. I caught it this time be accident. I changed resolutions and it did it immediately.

I just caught the warranty comment about the Plasma. It doesnt cover burn-in. I understood when I bought it that this could be a problem. I had a long heart to heart with the manager"CircusCity  " about what the warranty covered and what it didnt. We also talked about burn-in and what I should do to prevent it. Im about 90% sure that most of what he was telling me was BS. The reason I say this is because it would be next to impossible for one of the newer plasmas to burn in according to him. Thats ok with me, I may be 100% full of BS when I claim lightning strike in the second or third year. Ive heard that its not difficult to mimic the surge that lightning would produce

The funny thing is, they rarely ever check for the product's defect at the service counter of the store, and from internal information, they get credited anyways when it's sent back to the manu. How about that...lol.

What other potential defects can one expect from plasmas, to warrant an extended warranty? I've always seen TV warranties, especially CRT ones, to be rather difficult to sell or convince, since I hardly see any CRTs crapping out before 5 years of service at least. Now LCDs, that's another matter.
