Black screen when returning from standby

Whenever my computer goes into standby and I try to return from it, the
screen remains black. I'm fairly certain the HD is still running. When I
clicked repeatedly in anger, the computer beeped. I have reinstalled the
graphics driver and downloaded the newest version, neither helped. This
actually happened to me about 4 months ago, and was fixed by reinstalling the
graphics driver. I can't think of anything such as new programs, etc that
could cause this.
