Getting WPA working with Broadcom 54g card and Linksys WRT..

Let me start by saying it would be really, REALLY GREAT if somewhere there
were instructions on how to set up efficiently and with the best security
(WPA at a minimum) the following very common setup:

1. A single laptop computer with W-Fi 802.11b and g capability.

2. A WPA capable Wi-Fi router/access point with cable/DSL modem attached.

3. A single desktop computer (optional) hardwired to the router/access
point.

But I digress....


I just purchased a Linksys WRT54GS router/access point, the main reason not
for the higher speed compared to my old BEFW11S4 802.11b model, but because
of the better WPA security.

However, I'm having trouble getting this working with WPA. Using WEP
previously worked fine with the old BEFW11S4.

(First a side comment. I tried updating everything on my ZD7000 with the
latest driver, including the Broadcom MaxPerformance 54g. The driver says it
is version 3.40.25.3 from October 28, 2003. When I try to update the driver,
everything seems to be OK. But then I check and the driver is still version
3.40.25.3 (whether I reboot or not). Is there any way to force Windows XP to
accept your new driver?)

When you bring up the list of available wireless network connections, it
says "This wireless network requires the use of a network key (WEP). To
access this network, type the key, then click Connect." It never mentions
anything about WPA, and the given field to type in doesn't appear to accept
the larger number of characters that WPA-TKIP (Wi-Fi Protected Access -
Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) allows.

(Another side question - is IEEE 802.1x authentication required to be in use
to be able to use WPA?)

I do see under Properties for the Broadcom MaxPerformance 54g itself, that
under the Wireless Networks tab that you select the network you want, click
Configure, and choose WPA-PSK as the Network Authentication and TKIP for the
Data Encryption. (Although I find it interesting that WEP is a choice for
Data Encryption under WPA-PSK Network Authentication.)

Is there anything I can do to get this to accept WPA?
