6800 gt or x800xl?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

well im upgradin my vga card again, so i was thinkin between the 6800gt and the x800xl. The 6800gt is supposed to easily oc to ultra speeds, so I was wondering if the x800xl can easily oc to x800xtpe speeds- if not, should I get a x800xt? In your opinion what card is stronger, the 6800 ultra or the x800xtpe? Thanks.

More about : 6800 x800xl

I personally prefer the x800XL, and I hear many people who say it performs better than the 6800GT, and costs less. The peak texel fill rate of the x800XL exceeds that of the GeForce 6800 GT by 12%.

If you overclock the GT to Ultra speeds, though, added with Shader Model 3.0, I would have to say the 6800 GT would be your best option. I wouldn't go with the 6800 Ultra because basically after your overclock the GT, you'll get a comparable perfomance.

Also, I do believe you can overclock the x800XL to XT speeds.

The x800XL costs around $300 dollars, whereas the 6800GT is around $350.

Personaly I prefer reading a post once.

but that just me.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

I prefer ATI cards and have also heard that the x800xl is faster (and also cooler/quieter, also) . but you might want to read some reviews before you buy

I'll sell you my BFG 6800GT...only used once. One continuous time for about 9months.

I lieky the 6800GT, but the XL might give you a better back for your buck. Read reviews.

Also if you have PCIe you might be able to get a 7800GT for 299(maybe more) pretty soon? or am i wrong about that? my mind is telling me late july early aug. but i am tired, so i couldn be wrong.

Ah, I'm so sorry for that triple post. When I tried submiting my original post for the first time, it wasn't loading so I just kept hitting the "submit" button option thing. Then the phone rang and disconnected me. Heh ^_^;

By the way, the 7800GT is supposed to initially cost $449 dollars U.S. It's also expected that the card will launch in August at the 2005 Quakecon gaming event.

I'd say X800XL if you want PCI-E and 6800GT if you want AGP. Also the X800XL isn't a good OC card but the 6800GT is very good for OC. Both cards are very good but I'd wait to see what the 7800GT does/costs.

just because it costs 449 at release, doesn't mean thats what it will go for 2months later.

People are getting the BFG 7800GTX which is supposed to be 599, for ~430 shipped.
SO i think the 7800GT will settle around ~350 if its released at 450

$449 to $299 in 2 months? Not likely. Even the GF6800GT barely hits that more than a year later. Also this would cut into whatever mid-range card they decide to launch.

The funny part about the X800XL overclocking versus the GF6800GT overclocking is that they both overclock somewhat, and maybe on paper (or M$ Word  ) the GT overclocks more, but in effect whatever the cards were best at before their respective overclocks, they are still the best at after the overclocks. An overlocked GF6800GT doesn't dethrone an X800XL in HL2, FartCry, etc, and an OC'ed X800XL doesn't best a GF6800GT in D3, Riddick, etc.

When there is change it's like going from a tie to one wining by a frame or two. These cards don't exist in a vaccum, and while the OC's are sexy (hey I too love getting free performance boost) they don't really change what card would best fit someone's gaming habits IMO. The best bet still is to look at the games you play the resolutions and settings you like and go from there, and OC'ing will usually have negligible impact on that.

I can sum it up for you quite simply:

X800 XL for pricing (it dethroned the 6800 GT as the price/performance king, so there you go)

6800 GT for future proofing (you'll be seeing lots of SM 3.0, 32 Bit FPP and extra stuff ATI still hasn't added relatively soon)

Both are excellent value for the money, and performance is very similar. I'd go with the X800 XL on a budget, but 6800 GT if you're picky about image quality like me... >_>

If it's AGP, the 6800GT would be cheaper. If it's PCI-e the X800XL would be way cheaper.

Correction, todays current pricewatch has X800XL AGP same price as 6800GT AGP. But the Xl just dropped in price and the 6800GT has been cheaper.

Whichever's cheaper. But at the exact same price, the 6800GT's the better card; better overclocker, better shader model, and faster in a very slight majority of benches.

But it's not so much better that it justifies, say, a $20 price difference unless you're an overclocker.
