I've been following all signings and don't see any club changing much, at
first sight The Blues are the strongest pack again, the addition of SWP
gives us the remaining link at midfield as Duff played a lot out of
position last season. Del Horno is not such good as the value paid for
him, and Crespo back is a big question mark.
Arsenal will bet on youth, and they have tradition to be bigger then what
we see, so depending on injuries they will be there.
Manchester haven't changed either, but with RvN back on form and Rooney
more mature we have the 3 only clubs that can really achieve.
Liverpool have strenght their squad, and UCL glory might give a push,
however I don't see them good enough for the title. Specially based on
their defence problems.
Pls send your comments.
P.S. - I'm on good sense, this is not to tease anybody, but to hear how
do you see next season prospects.

Otherwise... South London!

Well, add to the mighty Blues squad the possibility of Shevchenko - then
I think we'd have a great chance again!

No, Liverpool haven`t changed much....12 players out, 7 players
in...ahem..Not that they can beat the top 2 this season though. 37 points
behind last season is a lot, and chelsea aren`t that much worse off
altough liverpool do have a stronger side this year than last (more
quality players, making the a league-team instead of just a cup-team).
I guess we`ll just have to wait and see.
My guess is:
1. Chelsea
2. Arsenal
3. Liverpool
4. Man Utd
5. Tottenham
6. Everton

Yeah, I think they've got a better squad then last year, more depth in
the wings, an actual goalscorer up front in Crespo (I thought Drogba did
OK, considering his injuries, but if the top scorer of your team is a
midfield player, you know your strikers have to score more), Mourinho
last season mostly played with just Drogba up front, but now with Crespo
here, he may have 2 up front:
Drogba Crespo
Robben/Cole Lampard Makelele/Essien SWP/Duff
Horno/Bridge Terry Carvalho/Huth Ferreira/Gallas
Ceh/Cuducini
Only problem I see is if both Drogba and Crespo get injured, who have
they got up front?
Is Veron still on loan at Inter does anyone know?

Honestly I've started considering only the first 3 clubs, when talking
about Liverpool that actually signed a lot of players I should made a
strong remark, but I don't see any BIG signings, as the likes of Zenden,
Crouch, Reina, Sissoko aren't enough to make you greater.
Of course Pool is a great club (history + last UCL), but domestically I'm
not convinced you can push for honours.

Veron was sold to Inter.
And as I see Mourinho will bet on Eidur and Carlton only.
Unless the chess game is on and a striker will arrive before the window
closes, what would be smart as every club have inflationed the market
waiting for Abramovic money!
Regarding tactics I don't really know if Mourinho will play a flat 442, if
so the team shall be very similar to what you say above, but maybe he will
do a 4-4-1-1 with Eidur as pivot and only one striker.

From his days at Porto, I know he likes playing with only 1 striker up
front, he did the same last year with Chelsea as well. I forget about
Gud!!! Mourinho does like him, and you could be right, he played as a
withdrawn striker last season. He hasn't changed much from last year,
still the same team, only with a few necessary additions, if anything I
don't see any problems with injuries to key players like they had last
season which cost them a CL final place. This leaves only Drogba and
Crespo to fight for a place up front, Crespo is a much better goalscorer
then Drogba, so my money is on him.

But Essien plays at right back or right midfield. I do not think I have
seen/heard him play as an anchor before. But then, I have not had a single
football match watched on my or any googlebox for a long while now.

'Pool has signed Crouch? Mr. I-am-the-biggest-lump-of-them-all Crouch (took me
5 secs to put in all the hyphens)? What the heck-sky?
Is Reina the Claudio Reina of Bundesliga fame or another one?
Sissoko is damn good if given the licence to hold the midfield and pass as he
wants to. He was one of the most promising players at Valencia in seasons
past. Has great composure, tackling and reads the game well.

Not am out and out winger per se. But as a defensive wide player who does
love to rampage forward and does it very well. That was the reason why Le
Guen loved to play him at the back with Govou in an advance midfield role.
Deadly right side.

No, but neither have Chelsea. With the squad they have (had) they haven`t
strengthened it either. The only club stronger, as a team, seem to be Man
Utd and Arsenal who have faith in the top players they got. Liverpool will
be stronger since they now can use Riise as a left back and zenden left
midfielder, meaning Traore can sit on the bench. A good goalie means more
points, and the thing called a "Dudek Moment" will be gone with Reina out.
Crouch will give the team a TALL player with the ability to win the high
ball, wich they haven`t done in a while. Now, in january they got
Morientes and with Cisse fully recovered I think they strengthen the team
as well. All the contract MADNESS surrounding Gerrard is also gone, and my
guess he`ll concentrate more on PLAYING this season.... Sissoko I don`t
know much about, and not 4-5 of the other signings as well. I think
Benitez has invested wisely in young and "coming" players. They were no 1
when there weren`t so much money in football, and they don`t have the
echonomy to do otherwise without selling the soul of the club (hello man
utd....).
Anyway, I think it`ll be a great season and I can`t wait to see how the
youngsters have improved during this last year. Warnock, Welsh, Pongolle,
Tallec etc.

I agree that Liverpool have strengthened the most over the summer.
One guy i've liked watching in pre-season with the reds has been Darren
Potter (He seemed to play right wing a lot, Excellent crosser of the ball
and I see a bright future for the lad) but Cisse if he's over his injury
will be like Liverpool having signed a new striker, Baros hopefully will
leave. Crouch actually has ball skills to go with his height, hopefully not
another horsky ;-)
Le Tallec seemed to do everything BUT score, morientes has been
dissapointing in pre-season for me, but he's a renowned striker so hopefully
will find his feet.
Reina has been a good keeper from what i saw in the matches recently. But
Riise seemed to not understand what being leftback was so far.... lol. He
seems to play more attacking left than Zenden when both on the same field.
I rate Liverpool highly this season and wish them all the best.

I really can't see anyone taking the League title away from Chelsea this
season. And I think the main thing stopping Liverpool from snatching second
this year, will be the number of matches they have to play. Three to be
relegated from West Brom, Wigan, Fulham and Sunderland.

If Newcastle would sign the strikers they need, they could be in with a
shout of a top 5 finish this season. They have a very good looking
midfield, though I worry about the left hand side, and a good defence,
though I still think Titus Shambles is the weak link, and one of the best
goalies in the league in Shay.
But up front they are seriously lacking. Shearer, as much as I love him, is
off the pace for the league, and that only leaves Chopra and Ameobi. And a
few of you know I don't rate Ameobi ;-)
So the Toon need a decent DC and either or both Anelka (*shudders*) or Boa
Morte.
Of course Chris or the other resident Toon Army can totally tell it
different, but this is just how I see it ;-)

He's a defensive midfielder, does play in the wing for Lyon, but also
gets his share of goals as well (more then Makelele). I think he's a
great tackler, he can easily slot into that anchor role.

Reina is a young Spanish goalkeeper, not the american Claudio you know.
Sissoko is still quite young (22, I think), but he has potential. Crouch
I think is a huge gamble. Throughout his career, he's never really been
a goalscorer, the only reason I think he's even made it as a
professional is due to his height. We'll have to see though...

I actually think this season is 1-2 seasons too soon to talk about top two
in the league. They were terribly far behind last season, and starting the
season with 6 new players in starting 11 is not the same as having a good
team, just good players. Next season, maybe, the may be challengers, but
this season is their "training" period. Schalke 04 wants Baros after
selling Ailton to Besiktas, and I think he`ll go. Shcalke has the money
and Liverpool doesn`t need Baros. He works hard but rarely score and he
usually run AWAY from the goal.....

I think that's quite harsh on Baros, I actually think he's a good
player, I thought he did well last season, considering he was under so
much pressure being their only available striker. He was their top
scorer after all. I hope he stays, but if he does leave, I wish him the
best, cause I think he's got the potential to do really well.

Undisclosed doesn't mean he left for money though...... Just they didn't
disclose what he left. 2 year loan seems ok ;-)

Yep. The centre in an NBA franchise team. Great for heading crosses at his
height.

I said it should be confirmed, as I don't know the truth on it.

<A very late reply to a thread that has gone beyond this Reina thing, but I was
rereading this thread and found I left out one bit of of response.>
That American Claudio is "Claudio Reyna". The Reina I was referring to is an Italian
playing in Germany.
The lightbulb has lit up, the penny dropped, cliches galore and it only took me 36
hrs.

Nothing new at United but a fuller fit Van Nisselroy would be a huge boost.
Shame he seems to of forgotten what the net looks like. Keane is still
getting older and has no sign of replacenent
Arsenal are weaker without Viera, and they haven't signed a replacement. At
least United still have Keane if they need him.
Everton have strenghten their squad but know they are never going to
challenge for the title. Their target for this season should be fifth, as
long as they reach the Champions Leage group phase.
Liverpool have added lots of depth. They are a slightly better side and much
more able to deal with injury (no more enforced one man up front), but they
have an extra 10 games to play so they will need the extra depth to cover
that.
Chelsea will win unless Crespo fails to perform.
Man United will be second if Smith takes to midfield as well as Fergy says
he should.
Liverpool will be too exhasted tomount a real challenge.
Chelsea by ten points ahead of Arsenal/ Man United
Everyone else 20 points behind again

Titus is a better forward than his brother Tes. He should be challenging for
top scoring in the second division, not defending in the Premiership

Yes, he has the potential, and was excellent in the euros, but liverpool
doesn`t play that kind of football. Now they play like "old" valenica did
and they need a striker that score...and only need 2-3 chances to make a
goal. I doubt Morientes has what it takes to make it in the premiership.
He seem to weak. I think Cisse has the physic to be a good premiership
player, but after his injury he seem to hold back, but I`m sure that`s
normal after an injury like that. With the TALL Crouch up front and with
those two little fast dribblers (tallec and pongolle) I think they got a
fine mix of routine (morientes), young and good (cisse, crouch) and talent
(pongolle, tallec, mellor).
