Can laptop graphics cards output higher than it's screens' native res?

I've been looking at the Lenovo Y580 gaming laptop with 1366x768 screen (tight budget), and I was wondering if I could get like 1440x900 on an external monitor. The GTX 660m could definitely handle it.... please answer!
