Can laptop graphics cards output higher than it's screens' native res?

I've been looking at the Lenovo Y580 gaming laptop with 1366x768 screen (tight budget), and I was wondering if I could get like 1440x900 on an external monitor. The GTX 660m could definitely handle it.... please answer!

If you are connecting it to external display such as TV or monitor the answer is yes.

Also, does anybody know how well Crysis 1 would run on this machine? Could it run on maxed out settings?
