I have a home network with a cable modem and a SMC 4-port/wireless
router. Both the wired and wireless connection to this configuration
work beautifully. When I added another WAP via a CAT-5 connection to
another part of the house, I can connect to the WAP and brouse the
LAN, but I cannot access the internet. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you may have two routers so set your second WAP up as an
access point only if it allows it - or turn off NAT and DHCP at a minimum.
