Here we go again: more driver "optimizations"

Translated from German, it looks like in some cases the Nvidia drivers are butchering texture quality on the "quality" setting for the sake of higher framerates.

History repeats itself over and over again, eh fellowes?

I know it's not a surprise to anyone, we've all seen the same story before and we're all sick of it.

But still, I can't help but wish that the driver developers would pay attention to the community's wishes and leave texture quality alone, but it looks like that's a pipedream...

More about : driver optimizations

It's kind of pathetic, since GeForce 6800/7800 are so powerful. Most users will never use them to their full extent.

Today, many people buy LCD panel (1280x1024) and these GPUs show their potential at 1600x1200 and higher res.

Bah! I stopped worried about that... I use nVidia Omega drivers based on 66.93 and the IQ is noticebly better than official nVidia drivers. I encourage nVidia owners to give them a try.

I have actually downclocked my 7800GTX right now since it is such an overkill right now. Wondering how the Q4 engine will perform with these high-end cards anyways. Both companies are just concerened with the FPS since that is basis of competition. They can do watever they want with the cheaper cards but for those that spent the serious $$$$ are in for the eye-candy.

I understand your point, but I suppose a lot of Average Joe out there don't even know what is FSAA and AF. It is actually why nVidia and ATI sells so much "MX" and "SE" cards!

I disavow any knowledge of such a list, or the members thereof.

Well, the average joe has no business owning such fine technology. They deserve the FX5200le 256MB. If they buy these cards and don't know what FSAA is, then they must be a spoiled rich kid who gets handed only the best.

All I wanted out of this 6800U was 1280x1024, max details, 4XAA/8-16XAF, in every game I play; But that didn't quite happen. I'm still quite happy with the card, but it's surely not overkill. Assuming the rest of the system is up to the task, there's no such thing as overkill

With the power of the GTX seems pretty pointless, really dumb.

Those dirty butchers. Why can't they leave it alone. IF it ain't broke don't fix it.

For me it's just funny how much ATi got roasted for their Ai, especially by computerbase.de , yet no one not even on B3D has really picked up on this at all.

And like has been mentioned by Pauldh, seriously why bother? These cards have more than enough power and AF is the least of their concerns performance wise nowadays.

I would like to see a deeper look into this because I'm curious what architecturally is the thing holding it back in the GF7800.

I think ATI got roasted because they had said openly that they were above that then got busted for it. However like I said this is a bad move by Nvidia especially having so much good press lately.

3Dcentre has put their english version up and added some additional info;

The added mouseover is pretty interesting and reminiscent of the Ai debate. But even with Ai no shimmering textures.

Once again it's a question of acceptable optimizations, becasue like the FX's floptimizations it's disableable in the 6800s, why it supposedly wouldn't be in the 7800s I'd be interested in finding out.

Wow, thx for the english link. Seems to be a serious issue. Will it "go away" unnoticed by most, or will the big sites test and expose it??? I think they should test it now that they know about it and report their results/conclusions to their readers. I wonder if NV will pull a "use this betta driver for filtering IQ tests" manuver. I also wonder as you said if the 7800 series is hardware limited and no full fix will ever come. If so and NV knows it, they'll probablly put some pressure on covering this up. Very interesting, but still sad. I
d be ticked if I bought the 7800GTX only to find HQ mode flickering while gaming.

Geee Da They nV no test their new vid cards. Before they release them to the public. Where's good old kinney.

Well, they're cheating again, lousy NV.

J/K I actually like the card. But it may get swapped out for the refurb X800XTpe that came today. First I need to throw it in another system to test it and do some more benchmarking. Only thing keeping me from using the XTpe in my own gamer is the 6800U may need the Fortron Blue Storm 500W to go with it, whereas I think the X800XTpe can use my 400W Antec. I'm a neat freak with my cabling, so swapping PS's is a bit of a pain. I'd rather spend the free time playing BF2.

I just find it interesting all the flak that was all over the web, from Anand to [H], and even B3D about the Ai, yet this gets nothing at all. I'm not surprised because all the anger at Ai seemed more like payback for the FX, while most people would rather just ignore this and move on because there's no equivalent to compare to. However I think that's what makes it worse. There's no need for it right now. It reminds me of the FartCry optimization when the GF6800U came out, no need for it at that time.

I really am curious though about the driver versus hardware issue though, and considering the 8x.xx series drivers are out there it'd be easy to test the next gen drivers. If the 80-series drivers don't fix it then a fix may be months off.
