Quoted from ShadowMage
R520 will be the newest generation high <something> GPU. There will be 3 types: XT, XL and LE. They will run at 600/700, 500/500, and 450/250, respectively. No info on pipelines, we only know that the memory bus will be 512bit.

Wavey Dave at beyond3d has said no to a 512bit bus. I don't think we'll see it either, it'd be too expensive.

As nice as that sounds, I think you are right. Too expensive. Could explain how a R520XL clocked 500/500 could beat the 7800GTX  (*Paul hopes*)

I hate to say I agree, <i>as it would be what the next gen cards ARE missing and what I've advocated over simply getting more exotic memory all the time</i>, but I do agree that the price is somewhat of an issue.

The only current cards with 512mb memory bus (outside of the core) is the Realizm series, and they are far from cheap. How much it would cost to support it on the chip (tansistor wise) and the board (layer wise) is the real question. You could have rediculous bandw1dth with 400 MHZ plain 2.5nsDDR (like that used on some FX5200U).

Eventually they may have to go that route unless they can get XDR for cheap. Imagine if the G70 WAS a 32 pipe card, what kind of memory restrictions that would have, heck even now I'd say it's b@ndwidth limited.

Everyone says it's expensive and I would've bought that when people were poo-pooing $399 cards, but now paying $700 for single cards and $1000+ for two is actually a reality, so what is 'too expensive'? And is it really THAT much more expensive than trying to squeeze ever more power out of the memory limited cores. Either they need to move to geater bitwidth, cheaper-faster memory, or better memory compression. We'll see how long before they need all three.

Perhaps eDRAM could be a solution. The xbox360 can do 4xMSAA at 720P with only a 5% hit on performance so if you upped the EDRAM to say 15 or 20MB you could do the higher resolutions needed for PC. Thoughts anyone?

eDRAM makes sense for the Xb0x because it does not have dedicated texture RaM, moving the necessary amount on package isn't going to work for all applications, but it would be helpful, and yes you would need at least 20MB to make it worthwhile for PCs and even then it'd limit it's use for certain resolutions and AA settings and it wouldn't be applicable to AF applications.

I think 20MB would be ok. 1600x1200 is 30MB and with 4x FSAA applied its 70MB. So with 20MB you'd could do that in 2 tiles with no AA and 4 tiles with AA applied. Not too bad. It could work down the line.
