I got this weird email today from Fido (that contained my full name and
everything) so I have reasons to believe it's not spam. BUT, given the fact
it only contains links to some weird inbox-ads.com website, it can be
either a stupid simple email from Fido that uses that webiste to send their
emails (OMG!) OR they had a security breach and now somebody is collecting
valid email addresses (and personal info!) from their database.

The email sounds like this (I must note that it's the first email I got
from them ever, and I am with Fido for almost a year now):
"At Fido, we care about your privacy. So we value your e-mail address as an
important sign of your trust in us. That's why we're careful not to contact
you too often and we send you only relevant information. We'll also never
share your e-mail address with a third party.

Because the choice is always yours, we'd like to know if you still wish to
be informed of Fido? news and exclusive on-line offers. If you don't,
simply click here [a link to some extension of inbox-ads.com].

If you do, we'll keep you on top of Fido news with timely e-mail updates.
And don't worry, you'll still be able to unsubscribe any time in all our e-
mails."

Has anyone any knowledge whether this is legit or not?

Thanks bunches,

Mitza

You need to show the full headers of the message. This is where you can
tell if it is legit or not (especially the Received: lines)

I once got a spam from Fido, and I complained and was asked to provide
the full copy so they could investigate. Never heard back from them. But
it was some promotion about Fido, but I had been told that Fido would
never spam customers.

Of course, this was before Fido became a rogers brand....

I got that too. and thought wtf, over 5 yrs + with Fido and now they decide
to send me an email.
seems like it is associated with www.inbox-ads.com....
I dont like the idea, that they care about my privacy but everything points
to this inbox ad place.

i also received the same email lately and chances are contact adress
have been leaked out of Fido database. somehow someone managed to get a
hold of valid mail accounts... what i recieved was a well built fake,
nicely balance acording to how it scored against baysian filtering. it
has a tag and a gif meant to identify the recipient, it containt an opt
out link wich probably put your email in a database for further spams.
according to its headers it came from server1.inbox-ads.com
66.216.96.226 wich domain and ip info points to a colo box at rack
space. the domain is registered to a "Schwartzberg Alan" when valid fido
domains are of Microcell or Fido Solutions inc for the administrative
contact. I seriously doubt fido outsource it's mail communication to
such compagny, it never has done so in previous years... also, a quick
lookup has revealed that 66.216.96.226 is heavily blacklisted on
many rbl's, consider http://www.openrbl.org/ip/66/216/96/226.htm

All my recent Fido Alerts have come from inbox-ads.com. IP as
above.

It is actually fairly common to outsource email distribution. There are
legitimate companies that do this. Air Canada use to use of of those
legitimate companies to mail their weekly websaver stuff. Then they
switched to some other outfit that was in a lot of RBLs so as a result.
many recipients never got the messages since they were bounced by the
smtp servers.

Consider that such very large mailing lists need to be maintained, and
those companies process the bounce messages to flag the email as not
working, and after a few such bounces, they'll notify the owner of the
list that such and such adresses no longer work.

Well, given that they outsourced their email communication (not sure), I
changed my email address to a Yahoo one and they can do whatever they want
with it. I am a bit upset as I would expect them to tell me that they share
my personal data with third parties. I have no guarantee that the third
party will treat my data as private...

Bit disappointed,
Mitza
