Are FPS gains from SLI 7800 GTX worth it?

I've read reports of folks with an upper-end system getting 70-80 FPS in BF2 in an SLI 7800 GTX setup at 1600x1200 with full detail and 4x AA etc. How much can the human eye actually view when it comes to FPS? Does 40 FPS from a single 7800 GTX make a difference from 70 FPS in an SLI setup? Outside of next-gen games releasing in the next few months, is there a reason to have 70 FPS in max resolution/max graphics over 40 FPS?

Edit - I just read an article on another site that says: "Even with expensive monitors that can reach even higher frequencies, the effect is somewhat lost as the human eye has difficulty in perceiving differences in frame rates above around 50-60fps."

If that's true then it would seem that a 7800 GTX SLI setup is for little more than bragging rights or to keep FPS rates above 60 in very very heavy combat in BF2 (or to prepare for future games).
Edited by MiamiDave on 09/02/05 02:08 PM.

I would say so!

Bur some people have a really keen eye though, and even if the human eye is "working" at 40fps(if I rember correctly), It can detect that its not perfectly fluid when its close to this value.

So some people say that high 36-40 fps is all you need, others will want 50-60 Asolute MIN fps...And finally some people just have money to spare and happen to like computer =)

Also there's the benchmarking scene where people need SLIed stuff yo grab WR!

FPS count is purely psychological in most people. You need at least 30FPS or the human eye will catch the lag.

Thanks. 30-40 FPS sounds pretty consistent with what I've read thus far - it sounds like a second 7800 GTX for SLI at this point is probably not worth the price for the actual visible performance increase.

In BF2 you probably need upper 50's to never notice any lag. It depends on you, your monitor, the lighting, etc though. In the 40's I notice it quite well though.
