I was speaking with some other collectors this weekend
about a Pac-Man MINI I've going to be putting together
and we were trying to determine what the following
Pac-Man mini would really be worth (what I should ask
for and expect to get) in today's market.
- Brand new reproduction cabinet with actual stained
sizes - no stickers, since the cabinet is real wood.
- New CPO
- New Bezel (Two-Bit)
- New front CP Artwork
- New Wiring
- Switcher instead of power brick
- New monitor ISO
- Rebuilt 13" G07 or WG4800 (possibly new flyback too)
- Original Joystick, but in great shape
- New Buttons
- Original Coin door, but sand blasted and repainted
- New Coin Door logo plate
- New floor Levelers
- New Speaker Grill
- New Speaker
- Original Game Boardset (will probably add a Multi-Game,
like the 96-in-1)
- New backdoor bubble
I'm sure there are other things to add to the list, but
I can't think of them right now.
I was thinking, with the multi-game, $1495 to $1695. Is
that out of line for today's market, unless I can sell to
one of those rich and clueless home buyers?

The primary thing that turned me off to it is the stained wood sides..
Even if it is more 'luxurious' for lack of a better word, it's not how the
originals were made so I'd have a hard time paying a premium for it.. To me
it's worth more rebuilt as it was originally than taking creative license on
it. I think 1k or so is fair myself but not to a collector.

Here is my take on it since I am sitting on a complete brand new everything
Ms Pac cocktail with a 96-1 kit in it. I would have to think on the price
you had listed, you are searching for the rich and clueless home buyer that
just wants a Pac for their house, but in this case, the 96-1 will confuse
them and they probably would not want it. If you made this with one of those
39-1 jamma boards, you would have no problem selling it for $1500-1700. I
could have sold a handful of 39-1 cocktails and I can not get rid of this
damn Ms Pac cocktail. I have had no problem getting rid of 39-1 cocktails
at 1600-1800 a piece, but while I offer this Ms Pac cocktail in the same
cabinet(as the 39-1) with exactly the same parts used and I can not even get
$1100 for it. I have tried selling it at Xmas, so that definitely is not the
problem. If I was you, I would use all Pac artwork, etc.. and go with Jamma
wiring and a 39-1 board. It will sell much faster and much higher in price.
Just my 2 cents!!

The last version of the 96in1 (2.52) has a dip to lock it into a
single menu. Dip 1 iirc. Also dip 5 should kick you back to the
menu at game over. I haven't got any feedback from that so I guess it
works ok. Either that or nobody knows about it. Might simplify
things a bit for demoing etc.

I agree. 96-in-1 and home buyers don't mix. Put in a multigame board and
sell it to a homeowner. I don't think a collector would be interested in
that kind of machine.

So if I use laminent on the sides, you feel it would be
worth more (to just collectors or to home buyers too)?

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys. I appreciate it and
that certainly give me something to think about.
Have the 39-in-1 boards really "matured" enough compared
to the previous generations that you trust them to run
without issues? I haven't seen or used any of these
boards and have tried to follow the discussions about them.
However, it seems like someone is always complaining about
some aspect of them (sound, too slow, controls, etc.).

Ill have to look and see what version I have as I dont recall anything like
that in the inst...
Dave is there a way to upgrade it if I have a eprom burner?
thanks
on the subject.... I love my 96 in 1 kit in my pac mini but agree that the
39 in 1 kit would be superior for the typical home buyer..

I'm biased, but I disagree that home buyers and the 96 in 1 don't mix.
With v2.52 you can condense the menus to a single screen and / or
return to menu at the conclusion of each game. You can page through
the entire list of menus using the player 2 button if you select to
display the full list. Four basic commands and you can run the entire
system.
The facts are the 96 in 1 is an easy to use, reliable, enhancement that
supports a variety of boards. Every single person that's ordered the
kit has received top notch customer service, quick shipping, quick
replies, and quick post sale support along with freely distributed code
updates. I have never challenged or argued with a customer but instead
used those opportunities to build goodwill.
You broke a header pin off installing the kit, I'll fix it and ship it
back at no charge.
Your old board has a bad 40 pin socket, I've even replaced those and
shipped the board back at no charge.
You're having a big party this weekend and need it shipped overnight,
I've done that at no extra charge.
You've got a tech question that's hard to describe by email, I've given
my number out.
This past weekend I delivered a Pac with a 96 in 1 to a home buyer that
had never owned a game. I showed him the combinations for pause, menu,
and resume. His four year old had it down pat in minutes, there are
also text reminders on each screen.
Here is the command set:
1. Press player 2 to page through each screen of titles
2. Use the joystick to highlight a title, press player 1 to select
3. Press player 1 + player 2 + joystick right to pause, joystick left
to resume
4. Joystick up to access menu (when paused)
That's it- seems easy enough to me.

I don't mean they don't mix because of their difficulty to use. What I
meant was that a home buyer would rather have 39 different games, than 96
variations of pac. Your multi-game boards are great and very easy to use.

Agreed, the 96-1 kit is great, but from what I have seen, people want more
varieties of games. Mike is also great to deal with and his customer service
is the BEST!

If I'm going for a dedicated machine, I'd go for a lightly used or
carefully restored orignal vs. a new machine. If I was going to have a
$1500 non-original, it might as well be a MAME machine with multiple
control panels that will play almost anything.
I think a lot of you guys really underestimate the wants of a home
user. Is there anyone ready to drop that amount of money on an arcade
game that doesn't know whats out there?
