I agree that's a BIG drawback (if true, Ratchet's statement overall is incorrect since gaming at higher resolutions is possible especially since the cable length in question is inches, not feet). I'll go on the assumption he's correct despite his recent propensity to stir the pot of unfounded rumours.
One of the ONLY reasons I thought SLi and Crossfire are a good option for people are for those who game at high res, especially on the DELL/HP/SONY 24" LCDs.
And THAT is the supposed market for these things the people who buy the large LCDs and the 21+" CRTS capable of 1900x1200 and 2048x1536+ resolutions. Especially the LCDs which you wouldn't want to scale down from Native.
While this doesn't affect me (prefr to game @ 14x10 or 16x12 on my CRT), nor will it affect most ATi users and most of their sales, but if you're making a niche ubber product then it needs to support those high end features, otherwise there's really no point to bringing it out. That the majority of people don't game above 16x12 is a lame reason for them, especially considering their promotion of HD gaming.
I'd be surprised if the TMDS is the limitation it is said to be especially since their last X850XTPE was dual link, but we shall see. If there's truth to it it's kinda of silly for the market they are choosing.
No time to read whole thing at work.
EDIT: I wonder what the integrated TMDS is on the R520, did they confirm it?
