I have been troubleshooting my pc for about a week now. I don't have spyware,
or a virus (according to microsoft spyware remover and symantec corporate
antivirus as of 6/22/05). My computer takes about 1/2 an hour to boot up,
atleast 5 mins to respond to any command. I have not installed any software
for about a week before the problem arose. Whenever I right click on a file
or when I attempt to run a program, Windows installer comes up with
"preparing to install", and then exits. When I attempt to reinstall XP I get
an error message telling me that a file is corrupt.

Puddy, I think it's time to save your important data and do a format and
clean install of WinXP if you have the WinXP CD.

Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and go to the Processes
tab.

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort the process list into
descending order by CPU usage.

Make note of the 5 items at the top of the list and post those items
back here together with the CPU usage percent shown for each.
