Hey,
I would like to optimize my computer performance for Battlefield 2. At the moment I have a shuttle SB81p, 3.4 ghz
Corsair TWINX1024-3200XL (2 * 512) geforce 6800 GT.

* When I play, I get heavy freeze frames when it tries to load all the gameinformation into the memory, after awhile everythings seems to be loaded and it is pretty smooth. Does anyone know if this is a ram or gpu memory problem?

Second problem: with highest settings, my computer auto-reboots ever so often. Most likley due to the extreme heat the gpu is generating in my small shuttle box. Does anyone know if the 7800gtx produces less heat?

I don't want to get rid of my shuttlebox, and It has not much space for a big fancy cooling device. Does anyone now a small good fan, that is better that the default on the Asus Geforce 6800GT. I would love to keep my HIGH settings in the game.

All help on this stupid question would be appriciated.

Cheers

I've done a lot of research into BF2. What I've discoverd is that you don't (unlike what everyone here says) NEED 2GB. You really only need 1.5GB. The game uses at most 1.2GB, so unless you have Norton running, you should be fine with RAM. I recommend you pick up another 512MB stick on Newegg... I realize the RAM won't run at it's fastest but $40 is a lot of wasted money IMHO. As for your overheating, I don't think you need to upgrade your card, the 6800GT can still run any game out there extremely well. What you need is a cooling device for it. I suggest when you go to Newegg for your RAM that you get some fans, a PCI one always does a good job of cooling the card. You might also want to pick up a couple of RAM fans, they just slide onto the RAM from what I understand. For BF2 you don't need to overclock your 6800GT, it does fine on it's own.

Or you could just go spend 500 dollars on a new card and another gig of RAM... If you asks me that shows you have more dollars then sense.

have you patched the game yet? there was a memory leak in the early versions of it.

Hi!

Thanks for all the replies!
I have patched it now, that made some diffrence.
Next thing will be to get the fans for gpu and ram.
I'll give that a go, and worst case I guess I'll have to
plug some more ram into the system.

Thanks again.

I'm still waiting for them to release a patch that'll use just under 1GB.(I've put my bet on it)
With the current latest patch, it's still using around 1.2-1.3GB with texture maxed out.
That's not likely to happen. The problem is that the high quality textures are HUGE files relative to the low quality ones. I haven't actually looked at the file size, but judging from the fact that it's a 3 CD game, I'd have to guess and say they're pretty big. That in itself is a load on the RAM but then you have to realize that BF2 uses HUGE maps (it has to, 64 players in a 16 player map would not be much fun). So the RAM has to keep track of many, huge texture files and what's happening in the map (arty strikes and such)... when I think about it it's a wonder that I can even run the game at low with only 512 MB of RAM.

I'm happy I bought the 2GB of OCZ platinum so I don't have to wait that long. Plus the 2-3-2-5 1T timings are fantastic compared to the cas 3/2T Corsair PC4000 pro I had in before.

Yeah, the OC'in was a concern until I upgraded the 3000+ Winny to a 4000+ San Diego. So far I've only been running stock speeds with the new chip. No time to mess with OC now, if that machine gets turned on nowadays, I'm playing BF2 on it.
