Install xp on sony vaio where the hdd crashed

A while back my oh's laptop had the blue screen of death, we replaced the hard drive and have been unsuccessful in loading a genuine copy of windows xp. I can get the pc to run perfectly on ubuntu, but that's not very windows freindly when it comes to him doing uni coursework. We have to install windows xp on it but I can not get it to load using the cd rom on the sony.Is there a way I can use my laptop to load xp onto his hdd using an external usb case? It would make his christmas if I could fix this! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mu h thanks

  1. What about installing it via USB?

There's lots of guides out there on installing it from USB, such as this:
