Question about Mobile Graphics

Well, I was just wondering for a relatively moderate gaming notebook, which graphics card setup is better:

Mobility ATI X700 (w/ 128 or 256Mb)

or

a Geforce Go 6600 (w/ 256Mb)

The possible setup would be either a 2.2Ghz Turion with 2Gb of DDR-400 with the X700 128Mb or a Pentium M @ 2.13Ghz with 2Gb DDR2-533 and a X700 with 256Mb. Otherwise, it would be a 2.26 Pentium M with 2Gb of DDR2-533 with a 256Mb Go 6600.

Thanks.

Performance will be similar between the 6600 and X700 - look at the other features and decide which has the most features that youu like.

which graphics card setup is better:
They are both very similar in performance witht eh X700 getting the nod in a few more games.

Like Rugger says, the differences aren't worth making the decision based on that, look to the other features that make-up the laptop.

i agree, look at cpu, hd speed e,t,c that would be the deciding factor of the 2 graphics cards in a laptop.

personally i would go with the 6600 256 i think the x700 family and below are weak compared to the 6600.

Except for that would be incorrect. The X700 is better thna the GF6600, the GF6600GT is arguably better than the X700PRO. But we're not talking about the GT versus PRO/XT, and even more so we're not talking about about desktop cards.

The GF6600 has about the same fillrate and memory bandwidth, but the X700 has twice the Vertex power (6 vs 3 pipes).

For all the advantages each has, that one has me convinced as to the tie-breaker (geometric instancing ring a bell?). I recently recommended the GF6800 version to a friend saying it would likely be faster in almost all games, and in most likely be about 40% faster, however the GF6600 is not it's bigger brother and in this case would be the lesser of the 2, but even then they are still both very close.

Some reviews of the X700 tech and in action;

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/acer_mobility_8100/

Truely either would be fine, personal choice is one thing, but the X700 is far from weak in either desktop (where it dominates) or laptop form. There is no GT here.

Just had a look at some other reviews where a x700 plain was benchmarked vs a 6600 128mb the x700 is a clear WINNER, go X700 its a fine card but weaker than the 9700 mobility which i just dont get?

Huh? Really? Where did you see that?

The R9700 in Firingsquad's review is a desktop R9700P. I'd be surprised if a mobility R9700 is even close since it's really just an OC'd Mobility R9600 with only 4 pixel pipes 2 vertex engines and still the crippled 128bit memory. The mobile R9800 was the first to move to 8 pipes and 256bit memory.

The X700 has almost 50% more pixel fill, once again almost 50% more memory bandwidth.

So I'd be surprised that any R9700M would beat a X700M unless somehow the X700 is crippled or using some features the R9700M doesn't have enabled. Another consideration is that the X700 is 110nm versus 130nm, which affects both power consumption and heat to the X700's benifit.

The only thing I wish they added to the X700 is the same thing I wish they had put on the desktop version, and that's 256bit memory.

EDIT:
Another good look at the X700 (alone) at HardOCP;

i googled it, looked at a few benchmarks but on second thoughts it was a comparison of desktop gpu`s and the x700 was substantially ontop the 6600, ohh well i will keep my trap shut next time.

The desktop version of the x700 gettins beaten by the 9700 hands down check a couple of sites out, even tomshardware has the 9700 beating the x700 by some margin, but i dont know how much we can trust that benchmark.

so the mobility versions are cut down to 128bit for the x700, thats tight, its deffinatly a clear winner in desktop stakes.

Nah man, everyone makes mistakes. Heck when I first looked at my laptop I looked at a few (2) mobility chip lists and both showed the X600 having 256bit memory and almost made me question the apparently far lower memory bandwidth of the X700.

http://The desktop version of the x700 gettins beaten by the 9700 hands down check a couple of sites out,

I'm not suprised the desktop version of the R9700 wins it's got that sweet 256bit memory, and I'm telling you, all these x700s, be it desktop or laptop, are memory bandwidth starved.

Anywhere from $2,000-2,300. (The Pentium M version is a tad more expensive...which is odd because the Turion is very similar to the Pentium M's on a clock per clock basis yet AMD's top model is like half the price of Intel's...)

you are so right you cannot be any more correct about the x700 being bandwidth starved, i would love to ask ati why?
