What's the best modern RPG for the PC? Video quality, gameplay, immersion, replayability, user interface are all important...

Ditto for Morrowind, although it's sequel ("Oblivion")should be out soon, and it looks to die for.
Both of these games are limited to single player, though.
There's a big following for Neverwinter nights, which is great if you're a D&D fan and like the idea that's it's capable of allowing human dungeonmasters to control a multiplayer server in realtime, adding monsters and speaking for NPCs.
There are some decent single player modules for it too. The graphic engine is a bit dated, still looks OK but nothing special.
There's a sequel coming out for that too, but won't be here for a while, at least I haven't heard any news about it lately.
Also deserving of honorable mention is Knights of the Old Republic, one of the best narratives in an RPG ever, but not much replayability there.

Truly give NWN a try... I ordered a 3rd copy of the Platinum version off of ebay last spring for like $15 shipped... I play online now with three computers from my house... but the single-player is quite good for RPG... much better story and character development than DS2...
DS2 is not as good as the origional DS in my opinion, but I just started playing it... it seems to be WAY more of a Diablo 2 clone than the first, and the first was a clone as well...

And when you add the textures upgrades and truform, and then all the various mods and user created quests, lands, etc, it's just great.

I've played the Elder Scrolls, but I never really hit up the mods. I guess I need to revisit. I loved the graphics at the time, so I can imagine the mods did great things. I completed the game, but never found the replayability - what did I miss?! What do I need to look at to reviltalize that flame. Links? Downloads?

I've been thru all BG, Icewind Dale, BGII and NWN. Liked NWN, but never found the online community to sustain the play. I've read about the sequel and I'm looking forward to it, but that seems to be a bit down the road. :frown:
Never played KOTOR, but I may have to give it a shot, too.

and Fable came out recently to PC, it rocks as well. And you say Morrowind sux? C'mon I own Fable for the Xbox it was a 20-25 hour game, and according to Xplay the PC version has one extra island for another 20% of play time. That's really a HUGE dissapointment, especially compared to the huge wide-open play of Morrowind and it's expansion packs, even the Xbox version of Morrowind was 50+ hours, and the PC version can give you easily 100+ for each pack.
Anywhoo, I don't expect everyone to like it, but nothing else has the same level of features when it came out IMO.
It was also the first game to show the advantages of PS1.4 (admittedly minor) with rain/water effects, etc.
I doubt Oblivion will be as 'special' but I hope I'm wrong, Morrwind certainly surprised the heck out of me.

Most fun user add-on is the Castlevania quest which is a scale representation of the classic game.
Edit;
Also worthwhile the character enhancement mod which basically is like taking all the characters and putting them on the make-over show 'The Swan'
The foliage mod does a wicked job on the trees and basically adds grass.

I guess I'm trying to make the decision - EQ2, WoW or go to some more oldschool like Morrowind or NWN. Not enough time for working on the house (D@MN KATRINA), fishing, all the games I want to play and posting here!
I'm gonna have to cut back in some areas. I haven't gamed in a while, so I guess that I could just not start up that blackhole for time...but I'm getting the itch to go thru a game.

LOL, my level of multi-tasking, get this, I have the McLaughlin Group in the PIP window (audio), and the Oilers - Stars hockey game on the big screen (no audio). If I didn't do that and post while working, I'd probably have no time to post here.
I am struggling to finish the last 1/3-1/4 of D3 I haven't completed, just to get it done, and I bought that day 1!

LOL! Work does provide me some opportunities for posting too. Too many things to do in such a short period of time! I've been trying to lay flooring since I got off of work. First time for me with this swiftlock wood flooring, so it's been to Lowes and back a few times for tools. About at the spot that I can make some steady progress, though.

Yeah wait 'til you get to those last pieces, that's when it gets fun.
I think we all could use another 4 hours in the day, and not 4 more hours to work!
Funny we play NHL2K6 at workon the Xbox and that gets my gaming fix, and occasionally we have good days like today (a bunch of us took a long lunch and went smoking cigars by the riverside. I had a nice Cohiba Siglo Grand Corona, which was a bit dry, but awefuly nice.
In fact today was a good day.

Indeed but generally the better games are somewhat short and sweet with good replayability.I'll have to disagree with you on that point. BG, BGII, NWN, remember the Eye of the Beholder series in he early 90s?, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege (yes I loved this game, too) - all of these RPGs were awesome and typically took 40-60 hours of playtime to complete. I always took longer because I was obsessive in finding everything and maxing out my chars.

I went through BG in about 30 odd hours and NWN was about the same, possibly less for me (minus the expansion packs)
I think 30-40 hours is the sweet spot for RPGs, once they get past that they feel too long and boring.
But thats just me.
Some people are like slinkies....
Not really good for anything but you cant help smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Different strokes for different folks. If I'm into a game I can zone on it for ungodly amounts of time. Tweaking and trying something one way, then saving and going back to try it another way to see what came out the best. Going thru it using multiple classes on different difficulty levels...I get a little obsessive with it really.
I can't do that with all RPGs - if it's just an ok game then I think you're about right on the length.

Longer game = Better game? I think not.Good for you, then you probably enjoyed the short 20hrs of gameplay from Fable for $45-60.
Personally I want a game that lasts. And like Rugger says it depends on the quality as well, but more time is a good thing if you enjoy what you're doing.
The replayability of Fable is even less than Morrowind because it doesn't have the mod community with a construction set like Morrowind has.
Another thing about Morrowind is that it was pretty much a surprise as to how good it was, while Fable was overhyped and didn't deliver on Peter Molyneux’s claim to be the best ever.
Short in Fable's terms is NOT good, nor is short in most RPGs, you want character development. Short is good for a game like UT2K4, not something you have to spend time building your character to play.

Length is good but if I can have a 20-30 hour fun game or a 40-60 hour game thats fun at places but pretty drawn out I'll take the 20-30.

There's over 100+ hours in Morrowind, and that does offer far more replayability, because if you want you can replay as a new or similar character and then play all that other content. With fable you can 'decide to be good or evil' but the path is still very similar, and straying outside the main quest doesn't offer much at all.
As for the level of 'fun' that's not something you can easily debate, because Tetris is pretty fun, and offers alot of replayability, but it doesn't make it a good RPG. However the factors I've mentioned all contribute to making and RPG something more than just one person's interpretation of fun.

You forget I've played Fable (played it through twice because I was expecting more, nope!) and Morrowind (still playing it), and compared to Morrowind and other similarly open-ended games, Fable IS linear, and far too Short. And when a game is over and you say "That's all there is?!?" it being short is not a good thing. And based on the reviews, not only am I not the only one who thought so, but others were far more harsh on it.

If you want to argue Fable versus Morrowind, it's a pretty simple argument since Morrowind sold more on the Xbox, and got game of the year nods. Fable didn't, but it did get 'Hype' nods from people like X-play who said all the things I did plus they said it didn't match the hype.
Considering how long after Morrowind that Fable finally came out, it's a pale shadow.

No, that would be you with the following;

And you say Morrowind sux? C'mon I own Fable for the Xbox it was a 20-25 hour game, and according to Xplay the PC version has one extra island for another 20% of play time. That's really a HUGE dissapointment, especially compared to the huge wide-open play of Morrowind and it's expansion packs, even the Xbox version of Morrowind was 50+ hours, and the PC version can give you easily 100+ for each pack.Well I guess I did sort of start it but you did react, oh well its not like it matters.

I made the jump and reinstalled NWN - it's been sucking away my time some already. Morrowwind is right there on the desk in front of me and I'm debating on whether I should reinstall that time sump...

I had the SOU and HOTU, but my HOTU was killed by Katrina (BIATCH). :frown: I'll have to see if I can get another copy from Bioware or Atari. What are some good modules? Are the premium modules worth the $5-10?

Tragic, HOTU was way better then SOU. I never played the premium modules, my friend used to make them so we'd play through them together kicking everyones ass.
I'll install NWN again and look around for some good modules to play.

I have heard the premium modules are not worth it... they stop just as you get going... but there are hundreds of fan made modules to download, and some of there are awesome and do take 20+ hours to complete....
But Rugger, World of Antaria, the NWN server I have spent the last 8 months or so playing on is about to close down, for the Design Team and DMs have been building a new world over the course of a year now. The old server will close down and a new server called Lith Crescera (found in PW Story) is supposed to launch this Friday, November 4th.
This is a new online game world where every player must start over with first level characters. And it is a fairly hard core game world, where 50xp from a monster kill is good, not the 300 to 500+ xp some Monte Hall worlds give out. Give it a try and be part of the new community there.

All you need are your origional keys... If you have your keys, saved in a text document in your NWN folder, a CD with hordes on it is easy to come by... The keys are even saved online if you used their website... If you have your keys, I will mail you a copy of Hordes... but likely you know someone near that has it...
